A transect is a line following a route along which a survey or observations are made. The transect is an important geographic tool for studying changes in human and/or physical characteristics from one place to another.
Transects show features of both the physical and built environments and how they change from place to place. A transect is a straight line that joins any two points on a map. You may be asked to complete a transect to show specific features for example a vegetation transect, lands transect, etc.
Sometimes they are drawn to represent changes over very small areas and represent different lands due to changes in relief or soil or aspect. Other times they may extend across an entire continent.
