Fitness instructors help people improve and maintain their fitness through exercise programs and tailored fitness classes. They work with people in groups, or one-on-one, and assess their fitness, develop individual fitness routines and teach them how to use gym equipment and weights correctly. They also work with individuals who are training for a particular sport or event, or who may be recovering from physical illness or injury.
Individuals who specialise in Gym Instruction provide individually tailored client assessments, technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They also provide supervision of a facility, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various customer inquiries.
See VET at St Peter's for more information.
Fitness is a competency based course and requires students to develop the competencies, skills and knowledge described by each unit under the training package.
A student must demonstrate to a qualified assessor/ the teacher, that they can effectively carry out the various skills and tasks to the standard required. No marks are awarded in competency-based assessments. Students are assessed as either ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’. Successful completion of this course provides a Statement of Attainment or Full Qualification towards a Certificate III in Fitness.
As there is no Higher School Certificate examination for Fitness it does not count towards an ATAR.
Three additional units will provide a Certificate III, a pathway entry to the University of Newcastle with an equivalent rank of an ATAR of 67.
Fitness is a Vocational Education and Training course that provides real world experience in the world of work through NESA mandated work placement. Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours work placement per 240-hour course over 2 years. Students experience work placement in a fitness environment locally and beyond. In the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), mandatory work placement is a requirement for VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses, and non-completion of this placement can lead to the course being withheld from the HSC.
In Year 10 St Peter's students achieved a Senior First Aid Certificate which is used as credit transfer for Fitness.
Gaining an industry qualification that gives credit towards future study is a benefit of school studied VET courses.
Fitness can be studied with a School Based Traineeship (SBT), where you 'earn and learn' while at school. For more information on SBATs click here or see the Careers Advisor.
Fitness students have the opportunity to enter post secondary study or the workforce. Tertiary studies include University and TAFE/ private providers to gain further fitness qualifications at a Diploma or Degree level. They may enter the world of work in fitness, gym, leisure, clubs and community centres.
