You are now moving to Stage 6 of your secondary education. As the minimum leaving age is now 17 you are faced with the decision to continue with your studies towards the Higher School Certificate, take up an apprenticeship or traineeship or find a minimum of 25 hours of permanent full time work.
There are numerous pathways you can take. Your study at school can range from selecting a pattern of study that includes achieving an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) or selecting subjects that provide opportunities in other areas. It is important that students take direct responsibility for their decisions as they grow and mature in Stage 6 in preparation for post HSC destinations. It is therefore important that you have a full understanding of your commitment and responsibility to this stage of your education.
As you enter the Preliminary Year and the Higher School Certificate Year, you are commencing a journey of less than two years that requires organisation, smart work and a focus on your goals. In fact, the more focused you are and the harder you work in this short time, will enable yourself to have a much greater choice in the years to come. It is up to you to make the most of your talent and the opportunities presented to you. At St Peter’s Catholic College, we offer many opportunities outside the Curriculum and you are encouraged to engage in these as part of your development and skills building.
At this stage, we (your parents, teachers, yourself and the community) are on this journey together. We all have a common goal. That is, for you to leave St Peter’s Catholic College as a mature and responsible young adult who can proudly take their place in society, conscious that you have worked to the best of your ability and used the gifts and talents that God has given you.
St Peter’s is a Catholic College and there is a commitment that we require. We expect that as College seniors you take your place as leaders by your good example to younger students. We expect that you will promote the spirit of St Peter’s Catholic College and ‘Live the Faith’. By re-enrolling at the College you are required to fully support the College by your daily attendance at school and at all College events. Most importantly we expect you to attend the Retreat and other important rituals that give evidence to our Catholic faith. This is an essential part of your spiritual development.
As part of the selection process, you will be given a Senior Student Agreement that both you and your parents are required to sign. We are serious about providing the best opportunities for your success, and we need to know that you take this commitment to senior study seriously.
St Peter’s offers a broad range of subjects and other opportunities that will meet the needs of students in the College.
Students at St Peter’s have the opportunity to study a pattern of courses that will allow them to continue their educational journey to university, TAFE, private providers, or to enter directly into the workforce. It is important to choose subjects wisely. Consider the subjects that you are good at, those that you are interested in and those that are relevant to your career aspirations.
Choose for yourself, not for your friends and most importantly, push yourself so that you do not undersell yourself and you make the most of your ability.
I wish you every success for this exciting stage in your life.
