Research from the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) suggests: “It’s more likely that a 15-year-old today will experience a portfolio career, potentially having 17 different jobs over five careers in their lifetime”. With that in mind choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12 is a significant step for our learners.
Subject Selection information is provided to assist Year 10 students and families through the subject selection process. It is important you take the time to read the information and to explore all opportunities, to talk to, and listen to a range of people to enable a better understanding of the 50 plus subject opportunities on offer at St Peter’s Catholic College, and NESA and post school requirements.
Research careers that interest you using the St Peter's Careers and Pathways Website and JobJump, however, if unable to identify specific careers, then investigate areas of interest that relate to your skills and passions, e.g. business, construction, health, science, technology and vocational careers. Ideally, research should include such considerations as University and Vocational Education and Training (VET), assumed knowledge requirements, course availability, Australian Tertiary Admissions Requirements (ATAR) ‘cut-offs’ and alternative pathways and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
Much of this information is available on this site and through web links and will be discussed with you at school and in detail during an Year 10 into Year 11 Re-enrolment Meeting in Term 3.
When choosing subjects for the HSC, the subjects should be within student capabilities and skills and yet be challenging, be an area of interest and motivation to the student and provide a pathway to future careers. When considering which courses to study, explore the content of a course. What are the course outcomes? Will a major work be required, or a performance as part of exams? Is the exam optional? Does the course count towards an ATAR? Students are advised to talk with their teachers about their strengths and lesser strengths, as well as individual course requirements, before making selections.
Over the coming weeks students will have many opportunities to talk to; teachers at the College, families and other members of the College community and the Careers and Pathways Adviser in order to make informed decisions about which courses to choose for a suitable pattern of study.
The Careers and Pathways Advisor will provide students with; access to the St Peter's Careers and Pathways Website; a career tool, JobJump; an understanding of various course categories such as Board Developed Courses, Content Endorsed Courses (CEC) and Board Endorsed Courses (BEC); information about School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs), TAFE and other providers and University requirements. Apart from providing information to families the Careers and Pathways Advisor will ensure a student’s pattern of study meets individual needs as well as NESA HSC eligibility requirements. All this information is also on this site.
Remember not all students go to University straight from school, so it may not be necessary or prudent to select a pattern of study for an ATAR. To achieve the Higher School Certificate is a success in itself and to gain other nationally accredited qualifications such as Certificate I, II or III in vocational courses will assist in gaining credit towards post school studies in related courses. In many cases a VET course will also provide assistance in obtaining advanced standing for chosen studies or careers post school or a pathway to University.
