Students in Years 11 and 12 are required to complete school-based assessment tasks for each Board Developed course they study. These assessments are detailed in the Year 11 and Year 12 Assessment Handbooks. This applies to all school and TAFE students, regardless of the number of units attempted.
For a student's HSC year, school-based assessment counts for 50% of their overall mark in each course and is listed on their Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement.
School-based assessment tasks are designed to measure performance in a wider range of outcomes than may be tested in the HSC examination. Assessment tasks may include tests, written or oral assignments, practical activities, fieldwork and projects.
In the case of VET courses, the school-based assessment mark is ONLY provided to NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) in the case where sickness or misadventure prevents a student from completing their HSC examination.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ST PETER'S ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
The assessment program for each course will:
Outline tasks that will be used to measure a student's performance in each component of a course.
Specify the relative value of each of these tasks.
Inform each student in writing of the assessment components and their weightings for each course, when the assessment task will take place, the mark value of each task in relation to the total number of marks for the course and the nature of each assessment task (e.g. assignment, test, project, etc.)
Explain the administrative details associated with each task (e.g. student absence, late submission of work, etc.)
Provide adequate notice of the precise timing of each assessment task.
Keep records of student performance in each task.
Provide the student with information on their progress.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF EACH STUDENT
All students are expected to complete the tasks that are part of the assessment program. You will have access to this assessment program, and it is your responsibility to constantly refer to this for each course you study.
If an assessment task is not going to be completed or submitted at the scheduled time because of illness or misadventure, it is your responsibility to ask your teacher for an alternative task or an extension of time, through the submission of an Illness/Misadventure/Special Consideration Form.
Illness and Misadventure apply only to genuine circumstances. In the case of illness, medical certification is required. Assessment tasks that are not submitted on time, or not submitted at all, are awarded a mark of zero until a decision is reached regarding the outcome of any request for illness, misadventure or special consideration.
If a request for Illness/Misadventure/Special Consideration is approved, then the task may be rescheduled, an extension of time provided or an alternate task set. In exceptional circumstances an estimated mark may be awarded. This resulting mark will be a measure of what you have achieved in the relevant aspect of the course.
NSW Education Standards Authority does not compensate any student for difficulties in performing or completing assessment tasks, even when they are caused by factors outside the student’s control. Some HSC courses have prescribed texts, topics, projects and works that must be considered or studied for the Higher School Certificate. Each student should ensure they are aware of the requirements for their course. NESA publications on prescribed texts, topics, projects and works for all courses in each examination year are available at St Peter’s or by checking NSW Education Standards Authority’s website https://www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/home.
ASSESSMENT MARKS
St Peter’s is required to submit a student's assessment marks to NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), calculated from their results on each formal assessment task undertaken as part of their HSC course.
In addition, in the case of vocational courses studied at school, a student’s report forms a record of student achievement in the units of competency for each course. A list of the units of competency you have successfully achieved is submitted to NSW Education Standards Authority by your school. This information is used to produce your Certificate I, II or III or Statement of Attainment.
In most cases, the assessment mark for a satisfactorily completed course can be used in Illness/Misadventure appeals.
At the end of the Higher School Certificate examinations, any student may ask for their position in the rank order in each course they have studied based on school assessments. If a student feels that their rank in any course is not correct, they may apply in writing to the school principal for a review.
