Johnny Romeo
Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s foremost Pop artist, he is leading the global charge of Neo-Expressionist Pop art with his exhilaratingly colourful collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics, Neo-Expressionism, Grindhouse intensity and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo fuses vibrant Technicolour imagery with urban grittiness.
Johnny Romeo’s work critiques the madness of a modern world driven by pervasive advertising, hollow materialism and wasteful excess. Armed with tongue-in-cheek humour and sharp social commentary, Romeo explores the way in which we construct our identities through the idolisation of pop culture and brand-name heroes.
Romeo is represented by many of Australia’s top galleries. He has had a number of consecutive sell-out exhibitions across Sydney, Perth, the Gold Coast, Alice Springs, Darwin and New Zealand. His work has also caught the attention of publications such as the Sydney Morning Herald, Vogue, Grazia, Australian Art Collector and the Australian Art Review, as well as the ABC 7:30 Report, SBS and Foxtel Australian arts channel STUDIO.
With celebrated and sell-out shows in New York, Los Angeles and Pennsylvania in 2013, Johnny Romeo has generated massive international buzz. His works have also featured in high-profile group shows like the URBAN POP II Survey in LA and UPRISING in Pennsylvania. Romeo is expecting to make a huge splash in the European and Asian art scenes with major debut shows in Paris and Singapore slated for early 2015.
Romeo recently completed a collaborative project with American punk band Blink-182, one of the biggest names in rock music today.
Johnny Romeo’s paintings have become highly collectible; with a recent square metre work ‘DOVE LOVE (Marilyn Monroe)’ selling at a December 2013 auction in Singapore for $18,000.00 (AUD). His collectors include major Hollywood stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Gossett and many others.

Romeo was born in Newtown, Sydney. He got his Bachelor Art Education at College of Fine Arts in Sydney and his Master Degree from the University of Western Sydney. Ever since Johnny could remember, or better said, ever since he was able to hold a pen – he started drawing. Romeo used to draw for hours as a kid, and he drew in detail everything he ever saw: object and places, people and toys…
A term used to describe a movie that sacrifices the traditional film-making concepts such as good acting, character development, production values, creative directing and an understandable plot outline in favor for sex, gore, nudity, violence and other shocking themes.
The term originates from the word used to describe theaters that were known to screen such movies.
The term has now been re-popularised through Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez movie using that particular name.
