HOW DOES ART INFLUENCE WHAT WE CAN LEARN ABOUT OURSELVES AND OUR SOCIETY?
This is our focus question that we will be exploring and returning to throughout the course.
Purpose: This routine encourages students to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations. It helps stimulate curiosity and sets the stage for inquiry.
1. I SEE
Look at the subject silently for about a minute. Focus on pure OBSERVATION not your FEELINGS.
Believe in yourself. You have vision.
I can describe what I see in a few words.
I can elaborate on what I observe and describe what I see using adjectives in detail.
I can identify on the size, shape, colour and arrangement of forms (composition).
I can identify symbols that have obvious meaning.
2. ITHINK
Take time to gather information into logical thought.
Believe in yourself. You have already observed carefully .You can make decisions.
I think it is made of............(What?)
EVIDENCE! ELABORATE!
I think it was made because........... (Why?) EVIDENCE! ELABORATE!
It makes me remember........(What? Why?)
EVIDENCE! ELABORATE!
I think the symbols mean.........(What?)
EVIDENCE ELABORATE!
I think the colour means...........(What?)
EVIDENCE ELABORATE!
It may have something to do with..... (Who? When? Where?)
EVIDENCE ELABORATE!
By thinking I can back up my interpretation with reason. I have explored what I have observed ,became a critical thinker and have come to conclusions.
I believe in myself.
I am an art critic.
3. I WONDER
Believe in yourself. You have already proved to be a sharp observer and a critical thinker now it is time to think abstractly and use your imagination. Push thinking to another level.
I wonder what was the artist thinking about.
I wonder if there could be another meaning?
I wonder if the symbols are metaphors? (Something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.)
What am I curious about?
Is there anything that is an enigma? (puzzle)?
I wonder if other people interpret this work the same as me?
DISCUSS with OTHERS.

ART MAKING
Experimental and risk taking practice is important in art. With out these, creativity and originality can be stalled. Document all evidence of you journey towards creating an artwork in your Visual Arts Diary.
A completed work in art is called a fully resolved or fully refined work. This means the artist is satisfied with it .
