The Department of Sanskrit is one of the oldest departments in Deshbandhu College. The Department of Sanskrit at DBC promotes the appreciation of this rich and scientific language, crucial to the understanding of several Indian cultural, philosophical, religious, grammatical, linguistics, epigraphy and archaeological, poetics and aesthetics traditions. The thrust areas of the course are Vedic and Upanishadic lore, history of ancient Indian knowledge traditions, philosophy, Arthashastra and other modern areas such as computational-Sanskrit. It imparts teaching to students at B.A (Hons.), B.A (Prog.) and at M.A. level.

Sanskrit is language of ancient India related to the rich and glorious heritage with a history of 3,500 years. Sanskrit is relevant today because it remains the chief medium of unlocking the wisdom of our ancient thinkers. It is the primary liturgical language of Hinduism and the predominant language of most works of Hindu Philosophy as well as of some of the most prominent Jain and Buddhist texts. Efforts are being made at national and international level to preserve its importance and make it popular.

The Department of Sanskrit at DBC promotes academic excellence and also helps in developing the overall personality of the students by organizing seminars, lectures, quiz, debates, shloka-recitation, antakshari and shloka-singing competitions. The department regularly organizes ‘Saraswati Vyakhyanmala’ on the occasion of Vasant Panchami under which noted scholars are invited to deliver motivating lectures.
