I made a complex design in Adobe Illustrator, I made each layer that I was gonna cut organized into different layers and documents. I started cutting out layers of wood and acrylic on the epilog laser
I played with my designs cutting individual layers and pieces out 1 by 1 and putting them together in the tire, I cut out the dirt bikes using reflective acrylic I was able to layer together what I wanted it to look like in the end. I engraved the wood to give it texture and dimension so that It looked like a mountain landscape.
I cut out more acrylic and then I put my design for the backboard of the tire project into fusion 360 and did the contour and sent it to the CNC machine where I cut it, I then had to figure out a way to push it into the tire sort of like I do with dirtbike rims. I secured it to the tire with screws. I then pu the pieces that I cut out onto it and started gluing them down how I liked them.
I secured everything to the tire and to the backboard wood that I painted, I glued all my bikes down and it was looking good and done!
What went well during this project?
the design process and the laser printing process all went very smooth it was really fun bringing my ideas to life and I love how well everything I cut out of acrylic came out.
What challenges did you encounter?
I underestimated how hard It was to put the 17 inch round of wood into the tire, so I struggled forcing it into the tire like a rim, but I soon figured out there was an easier way. I also found out I couldn't get the screws in the back through the tire because where I was trying to secure the wood to the rubber there was metal in the rim on the tire, however I found a way around it.
If you were to do this project again, what would you change?
I don't think I would change very much, I think I would make the bikes with a little more material because once I took it home it broke off from the part that it was glued.
