We were tasked with making a keychain out of 1/4-inch plywood that was roughly 4x4 and had a sticker image on one side and an engraved image on the other. the software we used to do this was adobe illustrator. The equipment we used was the laser cutter and the sticker printer.
I imported an image into adobe illustrator, in this case, I chose a photo of me playing lacrosse. then I used the line tool to outline the photo. I used both straight lines and curved ones to get the best outline I could.
After the initial outline, you can kind of make out what it is supposed to be but not fully. we needed to add inner details to make the keychain really stand out. their inner lines would be engraved on. this proved very challenging as the image I chose was very complex so a lot of trial and error occurred to find what looked the best.
after an initial print, I forgot that It needed to be an actual keychain so I had to go back and add a circle to the top for the keychain loop. This is where I learned how to use the cut and join tools. It is also a good thing I had to reprint because the shaft in the first print was too thin and broke easily.
next, we had to make some kind of sticker to put on the other side that was not laser engraved. I chose to put the actual photo on the back. to do this I had to mear the image and create a clipping mask. then use the perf cut and cut contour to tell the sticker printer what to cut out. the perf cut was to cut it out completely and the cut contour was to get the sticker outline cut out.
the thing that went best with this project is that I had some previous experience with design like that so I had an easy time adapting to adobe illustrator and could easily learn how to use all the different tools like the trace tool. the biggest challenge I faced was the picture I chose. I chose to use a picture of myself playing lacrosse but failed to take into account how skinny it would come out because of the small scale. this made the keychain more brittle than I would have liked and harder to work with. If I did this again I would choose an image that would come out a little thicker and focus less on the shape of the keychain and more on the engraved details.
