Summary of Independent creative project
For this project we were aloud to pick anything we wanted to with the requirements of 2 separate machines. I first chose to do the word angel in cursive with the halo on top of the N. I had a few trials which all ended in fails. I decided to keep the idea of an angel, but switched to angel wings and a halo. I will show you my steps in order making my angel wings!!
Materials used
CNC
1/2" Wood cut out
Fusion pro epilog laser
Computer
Fusion
Adobe Illustrator
Acrylic paint
Clear coat spray paint
Creating process
I started out with this picture as my inspiration. I transferred it into Adobe Illustrator and started tracing it with the curvature tool. I had to make sure I traced the insides of the photo and outsides. I also had to make sure I traced the base of it so my angel wings wouldn't just be hollow and laying on nothing.
This is was it looked like after it was fully traced. The tracing process took me about 15 minutes because I wanted to make sure my lines were straight and good enough to be printed on wood. After I was done tracing it was time to transfer to Fusion!
After I transferred it into Fusion I had to Extrude it to make it 3d and rise up. The picture on the left is what it looked like after extruding it. As you can see it is now a rectangle with depth. I made my extrusion 1 1/2" to match my wooden base that I had to make on the CNC.
After Extruding it the next step was making a 2d tool path. This is the set up to be order to print on the CNC and it sets up the process for cutting out. This process was pretty straight forward because Mr.Supeiro has the tutorial on the portal. Next I had to take out the base. As you can see there is no box around it like there was before. Once I was done with this I emailed it to the makerspace's email and began my printing process!!
CNC Process
This was the process of cutting my wood out on the CNC. As you can see there is a green square of tape under my wood. I had to tape around the size of my wood board on the platform before cutting it. I glued my wood down to the tape with super glue to make sure it was secure and wouldn't move when getting cut.
Assembling and painting
The picture on the left is what both of my pieces looked like right when they were done getting cut. My second piece that was on top was cut out of the Fusion pro epilog laser cutter. I decided I wanted to make this project actually 3d and pop out so it's unique. That's why I decided to put my angel wings on top.
I was going for the neon sign look so I painted the base of my angel wings white. The picture on the right is what it looked like after fully painted. The laser cut out of the angel wings I painted pink.
Finished product!
This is my finished product. It came out super well and very cute! The white really makes the pink pop and glow. After I painted it I just finished it by gluing my top piece on and then sprayed a clear coat of spray paint to make it shinier and finish it off
Reflection
Overall this project was super fun and it helped me develop more skills. Since the requirements were that you had to use two different machines It opened my mind and helped me realize how much I could do and how many choices I had with this project. You seriously can do anything you want with all these machines we have open to the students. I really like these independent projects because it gives you the freedom and you can make things based off of your own. This was probably one of my favorite projects and I am excited to do another one!
