I took an image of the Bahrain F1 circuit from the internet. I brough said image into photoshop to cut off the turn numbers and DRS indicators. I then took that and brough it into illustrator. Do to illustrators lack of a histogram, most of the next few steps are subject to inaccuracy. Once in illustrator I used the line tool to trace the track on the inside and out. I then used the fill tool to make the full thing black (I later undid this for the transfer to DXF). I then downloaded the official F1 font I typed out BAHRAIN and attached it to the traced track. Once I was done I converted it into a DFX file and out it Fusion 360.
I took the DXF file taken from Illustrator and opened it in fusion 360. I then used the extrude tool to make It 3D.
In set up, I set the wood detentions and set the origin. I also set the name of the file.
With the 2D contour tool I set up the full CNC file. First, I selected the tool that I would be using. I made a mistake and rather than use both the 1/4th and 1/8th bits I only used the 1/8th. I then set the bottom pass so that the CNC would cut all the way through. I also made a mistake here. I set both a pass for the bottom and a second, unwanted, bottom pass a little bit too high. I then simulated the cut and put the file into post before sending it to the CNC to cut.
Having done all of the digital work, I used tape to glue a piece of wood to the bed of the CNC machine. I then zeroed the machine and used the CNC machine to cut out my sign. I then sanded it and applied a coat of gloss. I decided that I didn't want to stain it but a gloss would at least protect it. Looking back, a stain would have been a good idea. I think that the letters came out surprisingly well. If I was able to do this project again (with unlimited resources) I would like to make a larger version and use led lights for live position during a real F1 race.
I think that the letters came out surprisingly well. I was a little bit concerned about how they would come out but I think that the shift from lower case a capital letters was a good idea as tethering the tittle to the "i" would have been problematic. I would have liked to not make the mistakes I made when making the CAD. I was a little to inattentive to detail and I would like to improve upon that. If I was able to do this project again (with unlimited resources) I would like to make a larger version and use led lights for live position during a real F1 race. But, realistically, I would like to make it larger and add a varnish or stain.
