To start, I drew a sketch of what I wanted the guitar to look like on the design sheet. The first one came out a little wrong so I tried again. The second time I drew multiple contours so that I have some variation to the design if I need to make changers. I took the sketch template and opened it in fusion 360. I then took a scan of my guitar and used it as a canvases. I used the spline tool to trace the paths to create the outline of the guitar and the void space.
I took the sketch and did a negative extrusion to the width of the walnut I had chosen at 1.65". I the used the sheet to extrude the pockets and holes to the proper depths for the electronics and string holes. I then removed the material to create the void space that is the corner stone of my guitars design.
For the CAM, I first made set the stock I made the back of guitar next. I drilled out the holes for the strings and the electronics pocket as well as the neck mounting holes. For the front, I cut out the neck and pick up pockets, the potentiometer holes, and the holes for void space.
I have not yet finished most of the guitar but I do have the body cut out. First, the screw holes were drilled. Then, the electronics pocket and bridge mounting holes were drilled on the back. Finaly, the stock was flipped the stock and cut the shape of the guitar, the empty spaces, the holes, and the pockets for the pick ups.
I think that all in all the CAD work went the best. It was well done, had few issues, and the finished products is one that I am proud of. I also ran a simulation to make sure that the structural integrity would hold up. It was challenging to get the initial design the way I wanted it. The first iteration was a little too long and it just didn't look quite right. I solved this by adding multiple contours of the guitar to the drawing so that I had some variability to make the splines how I want them. If I were to do this project again I would work a little bit faster. I would have liked to finish it before the years end but I sadly fell short.
