My final project is a topographical map of Mount Everest in wood, with an acrylic layer showing information, labels, and elevations.
Something that went well in this project was creating the 3D models and setting up toolpaths for them before CNCing them out.
One of the challenges that I am facing is figuring out how to attach the two halves of the finished design together, and having the middle layer not be too thick and have everything sanded well.
If I were to redo this project, I would try to figure out a way to CNC multiple layers more effectively and easily, and maybe find a different finishing strategy if that could make it look better.
Use the website TouchTerrain to generate 3D models for the desired region
Import the mesh file into Fusion 360 and split into separate bodies with heights equal to the wood height
Add in pillars into the corners to hold in the acrylic
Setup up adaptive clearings & parallel finishes for each layer and CNC into wood
Preview a cut at the desired height for acrylic and put into illustrator
Design the cuts
Add information or other details to the document & laser cut onto clear acrylic
