A Three-Year Graduation Plan is implemented as an alternative diploma that meets all graduation requirements of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, but reduces the number of credits needed to graduate from 28 to 22.
A student utilizing this option should plan to apply for post-secondary education, enter the workforce or enlist in the armed forces.
This option is offered to students who entered their freshman year in 2022-2023 and beyond (rising sophomores and juniors). Students must be at least 16 years of age at the time of graduation.
The plan will allow students to complete graduation requirements including CTE and elective courses.
An individual plan for graduation will be developed for every student admitted to the program.
A student enrolled in a high school who desires to graduate after three years and will be at least 16 years of age upon graduation.
The student will complete the application process, including signing a waiver request form.
The application and waiver form must be signed by the student’s parent or legal guardian.
An administrator and counselor will meet with the student and parent/legal guardian to discuss the implications of graduating in three years.
Required Conference. The school principal and counselor will meet with the student and parents to discuss the student’s academic progress, including course credits earned, and those still needed for a diploma. It must be made clear that support structures will not be available to the student when he/she is no longer in the high school environment. The student and parent must also understand that access to high school services and programming, including extracurricular activities and interscholastic athletics will be discontinued.
Plan of Action. The student will complete the plan and include his/her goals for transitioning into higher education, employment, or enlistment.
Review. The principal or designee will verify that the student has met/has a plan to meet the minimum graduation requirements and submit the request to the Director of High School Education. The superintendent (or designee) will approve the request no later than 45 days after receipt of a request.
Decision. If the request is approved during the semester after classes have started, the student may elect to graduate immediately or graduate at the end of the semester. However, if the student does not submit the request until after classes have started, the student shall be required to complete the current semester.
