What? The Francophone Film Screening series "Corps et institutions: bodies and politics in Francophone cinema" is designed to help participants discover original stories told through the cinematic medium and to expand their understanding of the French-speaking worlds and cultures.
This curated, thought-provoking, and eclectic body of films will explore a diverse array of narratives focusing on body politics, and well as its political significance, implication, and control.
We hope to bring new perspectives on cinematic bodies and the way they interact with different establishments such as the law: Anatomy of a fall (Justine Triet, 2023) and Saint Omer (Alice Diop, 2022), medicine Our body (Claire Simon, 2022), colonial politics Pacifiction (Albert Serra, 2022), gender politics Orlando: My Political Biography (Paul B Preciado, 2023), environmental politics The Devil, Probably (Robert Bresson, 1977), and the female body and the politics of (i)migration in the Québécois film Antigone (Sophie Deraspe, 2019).
In order to make each movie more accessible and intelligible, a short introduction will be presented (by students or professors) as to give the audience a sense of the historical, political, and cultural contexts, as well and relevant information about the directors’ backgrounds. These introductions will provide a framework for the discussion/Q&As that can be held after each film.
We hope to see you there!
