What? The Francophone Film Screening series "Voices of rebellion in Francophone cinema" is designed to help participants discover original stories told through the cinematic medium and to expand their understanding of the French-speaking worlds and cultures.
This curated, thought-provoking, and eclectic body of films will explore a diverse array of narratives focusing on the understanding of diverse discourses, dialogues, and experiences happening in the Francosphere.
We hope to bring new perspectives on cinematic on voices of rebelion and the way it will be focusing on: the voices of slaves from the Mauritius Island in 1759 (Ni Chaines, Ni Maitres), those of people resisting the nazi regime during WWII (L'Armée des ombres), and those of young women in contemporary France (HLM Pussy), but also on new ways of telling History (Dahomey), speculating on the power of metamorphosis (Le règne animal) and portraying a canonical stories of love, loss, and revenge (Le comte de Monte-Cristo).
In order to make each movie more accessible and intelligible, a short introduction will be presented (by students or professors) as to give the audience a sense of the historical, political, and cultural contexts, as well and relevant information about the directors’ backgrounds. These introductions will provide a framework for the discussion/Q&As that can be held after each film.
We hope to see you there!
