help the most. Knowledge is power—but in the DAV Auxiliary, knowledge is also

service. The more we know, the more we can do. The more we understand, the better we can answer the call.

Our DAV Auxiliary programs include the Family Assistance Program, DAVA 4 Kids, the

Education Scholarship Program, Vocational and Training Assistance, the DAVA Caring

for Caregivers Program, and, of course, we continue our support for all DAV programs.

We have many ways to assist veterans and their families, but we must educate

ourselves so we can connect people with the help, encouragement, and resources they need."

Knowledge builds confident members and stronger leaders. By learning our bylaws, programs, procedures, traditions, resources, and responsibilities, members are better prepared to participate and lead effectively. Fall Conference, National Convention, training opportunities, national communications, and peer-to-peer learning all give us opportunities to grow—and then bring that knowledge home to strengthen our Units and Departments.

Know Your Role — Know Robert’s Rules

Understanding Robert’s Rules of Order and knowing where each officer fits within the meeting structure helps DAV Auxiliary leaders conduct business fairly, respectfully, and efficiently. Robert’s Rules establishes the parliamentary framework for making motions, conducting debate, voting, maintaining order, and protecting the rights of both the majority and minority. DAV Auxiliary bylaws specifically provide that Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised governs when the organization’s own Constitution, Bylaws, rules, mandates, directives, and policies do not address the matter.

Just as important is understanding the parliamentary role connected to each Auxiliary office. The Commander functions as the presiding officer or chair, guiding the meeting and maintaining order; the Adjutant performs the secretary-related responsibilities, preserving the official record and handling organizational business; while the Vice Commanders, Treasurer, committees, and other officers perform the responsibilities assigned to them by the DAV Auxiliary Bylaws and Ritual. Knowing where your office fits helps leaders understand not only what their title is, but when to speak, how to act, what authority they have, and what responsibilities belong to someone else. The goal is not to make meetings overly formal—it is to help everyone participate confidently while keeping the organization’s business orderly, fair, and focused on our mission.
