Hula and Mele

Ka Nohona Pili Kai encapsulates the cherished memories of his grandmother's home in Pāʻia, Maui. Located right on the beach, the song paints a picture of the beauty of this home and the surrounding area, with a focus on the nearby ocean. Reichel portrays the swaying coconut trees, the gentle sea spray, and the soothing sound of ti leaves in the wind, evoking a sense of tranquility and connection to the land and sea.

Nā Peʻa o Hōkūleʻa is a song celebrating the iconic voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa. The lyrics portray the action of pulling ropes and sheets as the wind fills the sails, propelling the canoe forward. The presence of the ʻāʻā bird surrounding the canoe serves as a guide, advising the crew to steer the Hōkūleʻa on its course. The crew continues on their journey, ultimately arriving at their destination victoriously.  

Kaulana Ka Inoa O Hōkūleʻa is a song celebrating the legendary Hōkūleʻa. It tells of its remarkable journeys across the Pacific and around the world, spreading love and peace. The song honors its successful voyages and the skillful navigation of its crew, painting a vivid picture of their adventures at sea. Through its melody, Kaulana Ka Inoa O Hōkūleʻa captures the reclamation of traditional navigational practices of our ancestors. 

Sulu Tavoi is a touching Fijian song that beautifully pays tribute to lost loved ones while celebrating the beauty and richness of Fijian culture. The song's imagery depicts the beauty of communal dance, portraying clothes flowing in the wind and melodies filling the air, as hearts intertwine.  

Uisa Ta Koe Fakapo is a Tongan love song that the women of Hōkūpaʻa will perform at Lūʻau. Hōkūpaʻa is expanding in numbers and representation with many of our members coming from cultures across the Pacific, including Tonga. 

Kuʻu Hoa, which translates to my companion, is a song about longing to return to the one you love. As seniors departing from the place we've called home for the past four years, along with the people who have become family, this song captures the profound connection we've forged with those around us at our home away from home and embodies the journey we have shared.
