Baker-Berry Desk Assistant Job Description
Starting Rate: Information Desk Assistant $16.50/ Circulation Desk Assistant $18.00
Desk Assistants are the first point of contact between the library and the patrons who utilize our facilities and services, which encompass undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, alumni, and members of the community. The Desk Assistant position consists of two roles: Information Desk Assistant and Circulation Desk Assistant. Information Desk Assistants are responsible for staffing two information desks—Baker Information in Reiss Hall and the Orozco Mural Room—while Circulation Desk Assistants staff the primary Circulation Desk at Baker-Berry Library. Desk Assistants are trained for both roles and are expected to be able to work in both capacities as needed.
Information Desk tasks include assisting patrons in person and/or over the phone with inquiries about library services, providing general information pertaining to Dartmouth, and performing other assigned duties. Formal orientation and training are provided.
Circulation Desk tasks include assisting patrons in person and/or over the phone with inquiries about library services, providing general information pertaining to Dartmouth, assisting patrons with circulation and reserve questions, checking out/checking in materials through the automated circulation system, and performing other assigned duties. Formal orientation and training are provided.
Requirements/Responsibilities:
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Demonstrating cultural sensitivity in interactions and communications with others to uphold the library’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Adherence to library policies and procedures, as well as familiarity with and willingness to learn about Darmouth’s five libraries, the campus, and the community
Maturity and responsibility to work in an unsupervised environment and maintain confidentiality
Maintaining strong communication with supervisors either in person, via email, GroupMe or over the phone.
Exhibiting punctuality and effective time management for all shifts, as well as proficiency in utilizing the TimesheetX system to accurately report all shifts, while ensuring the timely submission of timesheets.
Proficiency in navigating library software, the online library catalog, and library web pages within the first few weeks of the term
