Writing daily is essential in the primary grades. In writing students apply what they are learning in Fundations. Writing gives students the opportunity to practice listening to words ("Say the word") and then matching the sounds they hear, to the letters and letter combinations they have learned. In addition, writing is an opportunity to share stories with others, to stretch out important parts and elaborate on ideas .

In the upper grades, students are working on developing their fluency across narrative, opinion and informational writing genres. In each unit of study, students write alongside a specific rubric that outlines end of grade level expectations. Student writers practice so that they can incorporate these elements with automaticity. This includes grammar and conventions as well as structure, elaboration and development.
