Let's Talk About it! - Week 2
In chapter 8 the class has a party for Halloween. At the end of the party they hand out prizes, Sayeh wins best trick and Humphrey wins best costume! Being awarded for something you did well always feels nice, so today we want you to award yourself!
Pick a prize that you think you deserve! For example you could be “best reader” or “biggest Humphrey fan.” Whatever you pick, make yourself an award! Once you’ve finished your prize hop onto the Flipgrid and show off your award! Tell us about how you designed it, and why you chose to give yourself that title. We can’t wait to see what you come up with, we think you’re all worthy of a top prize!
OR Pick a Topic Below to Talk About
TOPICS OF DISCUSSION:
It is presumed that Sayeh got a 100% on her vocabulary test, yet she doesn’t raise her hand. Why do you think she is so anxious about speaking up during class? What would you do or say to help her feel more confident? Do you ever feel scared of speaking up in class? How can we overcome this fear?
After it’s revealed why Sayeh is so quiet, Humphrey says: “You can learn a lot about yourself by getting to know another species.” (p. 54). Have you ever found yourself misunderstanding someone? How did you find clarity?
Humphrey has never experienced Halloween before and doesn’t get why the classroom is covered in scary decorations. If you were talking to someone who's never heard of Halloween, how would you explain it to them
Humphrey uses a rubber band to defend himself against Clem. He ends up snapping the rubber band at Clem’s nose and sends Clem hiding under the couch in the living room. Do you think Humphrey was justified in his actions? Could this interaction have been avoided? What would you have done differently if you were Humphrey?
Like Garth, many have secret struggles that can influence behavior. If someone you cared about were facing similar circumstances to Garth’s, what would you say to comfort them? If it were you, what words of support would you like to hear?
