Duties and Responsibilities:
Classroom Preparation
To prepare classroom and associated areas for use and setting out/putting away equipment and apparatus, as directed by individual members of staff.
To assist with the preparation of differentiated work for designated pupils.
Planning and Organisation
To participate in the development and implementation of a suitable support programme for identified pupils, with the teacher, SENCo and any appropriate professionals.
To participate in the planning process and contribute to the formation of individual student targets as prepared by relevant teaching staff and/or SENCo.
Supporting the pupil
To develop an understanding of the specific needs of the supported students including short and long term targets.
To aid students’ learning in classroom situations by:-
clarifying and explaining instructions.
enabling the student to use the equipment and materials provided.
motivating the student.
assisting in weak areas e.g. literacy, numeracy, organisation, language, presentation of work.
helping students to concentrate on and finish work .
meeting physical needs whilst encouraging independence.
liaising with the teacher/ SENCo to provide/devise alternative work if considered necessary.
ensuring homework tasks are understood and clearly recorded.
assisting the pupil to meet their individual targets.
guide and assist the development of pupils social behaviour, attitudes and skills, language, scientific and technological skills.
assisting with implementation of specific learning programme(s).
supporting persons undertaking training and work experience.
establish a supportive relationship with the students concerned.
Supporting the Teacher and the Learning Support Department
To liaise with the teacher, SENCo and any appropriate professionals in the development of a suitable support programme for the students identified.
To use the report records to record the support given and progress made by the supported students.
To give feedback to staff as relevant general observations of students.
To monitor students’ progress, identifying particular needs, difficulties, problems and to discuss these with the teacher and/or SENCo.
To keep formal records of activities undertaken and key evidence of developmental achievements. To make assessments for future learning.
To assist with assessment of activities e.g. key stages.
To provide information for, attend and contribute to the annual review process and/or case conferences. To attend other relevant meetings concerning the social/educational needs of the student(s).
To liaise with other LSAs supporting the students.
To take part in the school’s Continuing Professional Development programme.
To attend weekly Learning Support departmental meetings.
To be aware of school procedures with particular reference to the ‘Guidelines for Teaching Assistants’.
To ensure Health and Safety regulations are complied with at all times.
Administration
To undertake specific administrative tasks – associated students receiving special care or attention, as relevant and directed.
To support students with access arrangements in public and internal examinations.
Other Associated Tasks
To be involved in the appraisal system.
Attending and contributing to departmental and staff meetings as required/agreed.
Attending relevant courses/training to develop experience.
Participating in all aspects of school life.
Reinforcing the standards and expectations of the school.
Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
Promote the positive image of the school within the local community.
Ensure current safeguarding documentation and policies are read and understood.
Ensure any safeguarding concerns are passed on to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
