Core Purpose
The post holder will provide targeted learning support to designated students as an integral part of the school’s intervention plan.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
To complement the work of teachers by taking responsibility for regular and/or unplanned cover as well as agreed learning activities. Monitoring and assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ achievement, progress and development
Planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals/groups or whole classes.
Supervision of children (classes, groups and/or individuals) while carrying out pre-prepared work and work that has been set by a teacher
Assess the needs of children and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support children’s learning
Establish productive working relationships with children, acting as a role-model and setting high expectations
Promote positive inclusion of all children within the classroom
Promote positive behaviour of children in line with school policy
Support children consistently while recognising and responding to their individual needs
Encourage children to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage all children in activities
Promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self reliance
Provide feedback to children in relation to progress and achievement in line with school policy
To promote pupils’ independence, self-esteem and social inclusion
To provide support to pupils, individually or in groups, so they are able to access the curriculum, take part in learning, and experience a sense of achievement.
To complement teachers’ delivery of the national curriculum and contribute to the development of other support staff, pupils, school policies and strategies.
To work both independently and collaboratively with teaching staff in the whole planning cycle and the management/preparation of resources. Also to deliver learning to individuals, small groups and whole classes as and when required within agreed systems of supervision
To provide support for pupils, the teacher and the school in order to raise standards of achievement for all, by utilising advanced levels of knowledge and skills when assisting with planning, monitoring, assessing and managing classes
To encourage pupils to become independent learners, to provide support for their welfare, and to support the inclusion of pupils in all aspects of school life
Liaise with teaching staff to identify key topic areas requiring support; assist teaching staff with the development of adaptive learning strategies and resources
Attend Annual Reviews where directed by the Line Manager
Liaise with outside agencies, assist with related administrative tasks
Provide additional needs support for designated students on the SEN register e.g. by delivering work prepared by teaching staff, breaking down tasks, scribing, keeping students on task, supporting students at break times or meeting other needs outside of lessons
Help develop resources to accompany the interventions
Research potential interventions that will benefit the students
To be creative in working with pupils and enabling them to progress
Contribute information for Education, Health and Care Plan reviews as requested
Maintain high professional and academic standards and remain up to date in appropriate subject matter.
Knowledge, Experience and Training
Essential:
Courses in any of the following:
ASD and ADHD, Speech and language, and behaviour
Desirable:
Training in low level counselling or emotional support
Experience in running a nurture group
Herts Therapeutic Thinking Training
First aid training /training as appropriate
Qualification:
Higher Level Teaching qualification (HLTA)
GCSE Mathematics and English grade C or above
NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent qualifications or experience
