IB Career-related Programme (IBCP)

What is the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP)?

The IBCP is suite of qualifications that IB World Schools like Dane Court Grammar School can deliver. It combines the academic rigour and principles of the IB with well-established vocational qualifications and a unique ‘core’ course. This means that our sixth form students will have the opportunity to participate in an IB education while following a career-related course that suits their talents and aspirations.

The aims of the IBCP

We offer career-related courses in the following areas:

In addition, students will study a minimum of two Standard level Diploma subjects up to a maximum of two Higher level and one Standard level

Business
BTEC Business provides a sound understanding of the business economy and the organisations and systems within it.  In addition, students study Personal and Business Finance, learn how to apply marketing theory to developing bespoke marketing campaigns, and also develop skills in how to use this knowledge to their best advantage in recruitment and selection processes.   A BTEC qualification in Business is a well-recognised and highly effective pathway to university, the world of work, and also apprenticeships

Our curriculum recognises design as an essential creative element of Design Engineering. It combines imagination and creativity with the knowledge and application of technical and scientific knowledge and the skilful use of materials. We provide workplace experience and develop the transferable skills of communication (oral and written), teamwork and problem-solving valued by employers and higher education alike. We aim to prepare our students for the workforce, or continued studies at university.

Health and Social Care

Our studies in Health and Social Care allow students to analyse and explore complex methods of creating meaning, while fostering a love of reading and knowledge of our literary heritage. Our curriculum consciously seeks to build students’ cultural capital by exploring global issues through the medium of literary texts, thus allowing them to take their place in a multicultural, globalised world.

Sport and Exercise Science

The Sport Science course has been designed in association with a number of universities to create a well-balanced programme of study to equip you for higher education or to move directly into a career within the sports industry. Each of the eight units of study will challenge you in different ways, giving you exposure to scenarios and experiences that will support their development. This ranges from the biomechanics of sport and exercise through to sociology and how to collect valid and reliable data.

Core

Internship

All students following the IBCP pathway will complete an internship in the field of their vocational study.  Students will be matched with placements based on their future aspirations, or the skills they want to develop.  Over an eight-week period students will visit the workplace one day per week to achieve objectives set by their teachers and employers.  This opportunity will give students invaluable experience in the workplace as an employee, build crucial employability skills, and gain confidence which will benefit them in all their studies.

Following internships students have gained paid employment, apprenticeships, and clear directions for planning their future pathway.

Language Development - Japanese

Language development gives access to learning Japanese. Sensei Myers enables students to build their language skills in a fun and enriching environment.  Sensei Myers provides a rich programme for students to develop their appreciation of another culture, whilst learning Japanese, providing further skills that employers value in a globalised workplace.

Personal and Professional Skills

The Personal and Professional Skills curriculum develops transferable skills, useful for study that can then be developed in employment. It focuses on students developing as lifelong learners who can adapt to diverse situations, whilst recognising their personal strengths, and providing them with strategies to overcome challenges.  Students will be exposed to the many ethical dilemmas that face society, and taught to value diversity, different cultures and perspectives.

Reflective Project

The Reflective Project is an in-depth body of work produced over an extended period and submitted towards the end of the course.  It should reflect the student’s experience of the IBCP and in particular, an ethical dilemma relating to their vocational area of study.  This piece of work is really valued by students, teachers and universities, as it prepares students for further academic study.

Service Learning

Service Learning is an enjoyable opportunity for students to get involved with and give back to their local community.  Identifying their own priorities and areas of concern, students caringly solve an authentic community need, whilst learning through meaningful reflection for self-growth.  This enhances and strengthens their experience with the existing school curriculum and is part of the 'added extra' where they can demonstrate acquisition of the softer employability skills such as project and time management, communication and team working.
