Before diving into a massive project, teachers and students should discuss what SEVEN is all about. The discussion/session should include a look at Project Based Learning and what the goal is of implementing SEVEN into our schedule. This process should provide time for teachers and students to collaborate on norms, discuss grading policies, discuss the importance of participation, and highlight the importance of community.
Students and teachers should begin to brainstorm what project(s) are of interest to the class. Students and teachers can browse through our library of projects for ideas and/or can develop their own ideas through discussion and brainstorming.
Step 3: Choosing a Project (ideally)
After brainstorming sessions, teachers will choose which project(s) they will be aligned with, so that students can then choose. After teachers align with a project, students will then complete a Google Form noting their top choices/projects they are interested in completing. As we begin, students will choose between the projects that their team teachers have aligned with. Teacher teams will compile all requests and organize students into their SEVEN class.
The teacher and students will meet in their SEVEN to begin to dissect and brainstorm ideas for their chosen project. The teacher will provide students with the SEVEN PBL Template to complete. Ultimately, the teachers and students should decide on what the EVENT for this project will be. Teams should create an event that displays and/or showcases their project. Examples could include: an art gallery with new murals for the school, a Science Fair, the implementation of a recycling program at RPMS, etc. Establishing an event sets a clear goal that the SEVEN will work towards.
After the event is established, the teacher and students will begin to brainstorm the types of jobs/teams that are necessary to make this project a success. Teams may include: a research team, marketing team, finance team, etc. Not every project/event is the same, so the types of teams needed will vary based on the project.
The teacher and students will spend time researching their project. The type of research will obviously vary based on the project chosen. For example, a project focused on recycling might research: the recycling process, how recycling benefits a community, the impact of water bottles on the environment, etc. A project focused on redesigning our playground might research: materials and templates, types of games that students want to have available outside, etc.
Research can include: reading articles and excerpts from books, browsing related websites, watching videos, conducting trials, and looking at visuals, etc. The SEVEN team can create a vision board based on their research, write short summaries/CERs, or give mini-presentations to the class of their findings.
Step 7: Work Towards Your Event
The goal now is to work towards creating a memorable and exciting event! Events could include: the grand opening of a new school courtyard, an Environmental Science Fair, a Harvest Festival, etc. The event calendar will be shared with everyone at RPMS, so that other SEVENs can view and appreciate the hard work and creativity of the students.
