Self-Determined Learning (SDL) is a process in which learners take initiative for identifying learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying learning resources, implementing problem-solving strategies, and reflecting upon the learning processes to challenge existing assumptions and increase learning capabilities.
Self-Determined Learning is taken by all 7th and 8th grade students at CDS Middle School. SDL classes are led by our coaches, who create a structured environment to help our students generate their own learning goals and opportunities based on their unique interests and preferences. Students are also provided individualized support through mentorships.
Program Mission Statement:
The Self-Determined Learning Program seeks to provide students with the opportunities and resources to develop their unique strengths and interests, develop independent learning skills and habits of mind, and engage in the real world using their creativity and compassion.
