FIELD TRIP: TCU's A Seat At The Table: Black History Designer Symposium - Friday, February 24th | 9-5
[This event is ONLY for Interior Design or Graphic Design Cluster Students who have applied (and been selected) to attend as their are limited spots open]
TCU (Texas Christian University) hosted a full-day BLACK HISTORY DESIGN SYMPOSIUM - and we were invited! It was an amazing event and a GREAT OPPORTUNITY to check out their University's DESIGN PROGRAM.
The event took place on Friday, February 24th from 9am-5pm in Forth Worth at TCU's BLUU Auditorium, Fine Arts Building and also included a Photo Scavenger Hunt in groups around campus.
We had an INCREDIBLE Keynote Speaker + Panel Speakers (see below) and participated in hands-on Design workshops paired with other North Texas High School Design students.
The FIELD TRIP was all day - with an early pick up - and late drop of time. Transportation and meals were complimentary and students had to APPLY to attend as there were limited spots available at the event.
KEYNOTE: Cheryl S. Durst
Cheryl S. Durst, HON. IIDA is this event's KEYNOTE SPEAKER. She is an all-around amazing person in general - but she is also us commercial Interior Designer's long-standing fearless leader in our Industry - as she continues to serve both as the IIDA (International Interior Design Association's) Executive Vice President and also its CEO.
As a past IIDA Texas|Oklahoma Chapter Board member, I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and communicating with Cheryl multiple times throughout my professional years. I can not say enough good things about her incredible contributions to our industry and her passion to further our profession. She is just so very insightful and inspiring.
Learn more about Cheryl HERE. And if you want even more of her continual insight and nuggets (ok mountains!) of wisdom - you can find her as one of the hosts to the awesome podcast called THE SKILLSET.
PANEL SPEAKERS
The event's PANEL SPEAKERS included one of my favorite people - DANIKA LEEKS!
Danika is the owner (and heart and soul of) her own company, DANIKA & CO where she leads a team of interior product manufacturer's representatives. 'Reps' are liaisons between the companies who MAKE the furniture and items designers want to use and the interior designers who may need some (a lot of) help to specify those items correctly since there are many, many options in just one product line - let alone all of the lines that are available out there to choose from.
I have been very fortunate to have been able to work with Danika while I was a designer at Gensler Dallas - and she has also been a previous speaker to our Interior Design cluster and will be again soon. She showed us another career path option and facet in the Interior Design Industry that our students could take and also introduced us to her amazing product lines.
Besides being an all-around asset to the DFW area design industry, Danika is also one of the most authentic, caring, and inspiring people I know. Oh, and she is also a yoga instructor - what a great example of how to balance work and life through determination, discipline, and oh-so-important self-care and continual improvement through consistent practice.
Our students were paired with other North Texas area high school design students and we all participated in hands-on design thinking workshops and challenges led by TCU's professors and staff before heading out with our groups to go on Photo Scavenger Hunts and Campus tours hosted by current TCU Design students. It was AWESOME!
