Helpful Tips

• Pick a speech, poem, or monologue that is school appropriate
  
  

• Choose something you understand and care about
  
  

• Make sure it fits the time limit (about 45–90 seconds)
  
  

• You may shorten a piece, but do not change the author’s words

• Read your piece out loud several times
  
  

• Practice in front of a mirror, family member, or stuffed animal
  
  

• Work on speaking slowly and clearly
  
  

• Try to show feeling and meaning with your voice

• Stand tall and face your audience
  
  

• Speak loudly enough to be heard
  
  

• Look up from your paper when you can
  
  

• Take a deep breath before you start
  
  

• It’s okay to feel nervous — that means you are being brave!
