Pick a speech, poem, or monologue that is school appropriate
Choose something you understand and care about
Make sure it fits the time limit (about 45–90 seconds)
You may shorten a piece, but do not change the author’s words
Read your piece out loud several times
Practice in front of a mirror, family member, or stuffed animal
Work on speaking slowly and clearly
Try to show feeling and meaning with your voice
Stand tall and face your audience
Speak loudly enough to be heard
Look up from your paper when you can
Take a deep breath before you start
It’s okay to feel nervous — that means you are being brave!
This contest is about:
✔ trying something new
✔ building confidence
✔ celebrating powerful words
✔ sharing your voice
Not about being perfect OR winning!
Teachers will use the rubric above to score each performance
Classmates will vote for their favorite performance
The teacher score + student votes will be added together
The student with the highest total score will be the class winner
If only one student signs up in a class, that student will automatically advance.
