Above is Ms. Schramm's 2022 garden plan for a vegetable garden at the STEM Environmental Education Center. She plans on using the square foot gardening technique to make the most out of our space by the barn. We are able to grow quite a bit of food in our four raised beds - enough to share some amongst each other as well as share some treats with our animals. Last year we had a HUGE harvest and takeover of okra and Malabar spinach so this year we want to try and diversify what we are growing and try a few new things. We use the square foot gardening technique which we referenced in the resources below. Some plants need more space than others and square foot gardening allows you to make the most of your space while still growing happy healthy plants.
Whether you decide to start from seed or by transplant it's important to know when your veggies can go in the ground. There's nothing more disheartening than putting out your new seedlings just to have them die off in a frost. It's also helpful to know how long it will take for your seeds to reach maturity. Ms. Schramm put together a planting matrix that will help you know when to plant, how to plant, how many plants per square foot and approximately how long it will take for your plants to produce fruits. Planting times may vary depending on your location.
