Research Project

Interactions between social media use, product experience and wellbeing

During the past decade, smartphones and mobile apps have become part of the daily lives of most people around the world. While we spend an average of 4 daily hours using the internet via smartphones, half of this time is dedicated to social media and messaging apps. Implicitly or explicitly, designers are responsible for the emotional experiences that products can convey, as well as for their impact on the wellbeing of users. Since social media and messaging apps are products with many particularities with a heterogeneous and massive audience, and that emotional experiences and their relationship with wellbeing are complex phenomena, the research proposal aims to analyze the diversity of emotional experiences and wellbeing impacts related to social media and messaging apps. The present dissertation aims to analyze the diversity of emotional and meaning experiences with social media apps, and propose healthy ways to design interactions with them.
