Social Emotional Learning

THE CORE COMPONENTS OF SEL

oSelf-Awareness:Recognition of one’s own emotions, personal goals, & values.

oSelf-Management:Regulation of one’s own emotions & behaviors.

oSocial Awareness: Understanding of & compassion for others’ backgrounds/cultures.

oRelationship Skills: Ability to establish & maintain healthy relationships.

oResponsible Decision-Making: Making positive choices involving one’s own behavior.

These five key skills are essential for success in virtually every area of life, from education to employment to family & community relationships. Integrating SEL into the classroom not only creates better academic outcomes, it also gives students a firm foundation to operate successfully once their academic career is complete.

Bringing SEL into the Classroom

Bringing social and emotional learning into the classroom doesn’t have to be difficult. We are often practicing SEL and mindfulness skills without even realizing it, such as:

oSmiling & knowing your students’ names.

oHaving clear expectations & guidelines, including appropriate consequences.

oFinding ways to stay calm when angry.

oAvoid mocking or embarrassing students.

oProviding choices & respecting students wishes.

oAsking questions that help students solve problems on their own.

oBeing culturally aware & competent.
