Lessons Learned

At the last DEC #6 Meeting we shared lessons learned, what were some of the highlights, what to watch out for and what we wish we knew before starting our role. Hope these help you gain some insight to support incoming District leaders in their roles.

• Getting to know everyone in the Area so you know how to ask for help.

• Need to plot a 12-month calendar for Club Visits.

• Not being overwhelmed by more experienced members - but knowing to ask them for elp....NEED to ask!

• How to submit a budget to a club - a universal template for Club Budget. 

• Always double check yourself in terms of procedures and rules - never assume. 

• Spot the diamond in the contest Rule Book. Assume rules will change. 

• Relearning skills after broken membership...but being willing to try new things. 

• What you do and don't do impacts others.

• Just got to let the things you cannot or need to change that don't get done - Let it go! -

• Getting to work with a known skill - but with volunteers.

• Building a network with fellow Area Directors for support that still continues. 

• Build a great team. 

• Improved my leadership skills. 

• Communicating expectations and learning to compromise... (Judges) - 1 master. 

• Be part of something much bigger than myself....Empower others - you gain perspective and they gain perspective; compassion when solving problems. 

• Learning about accountability. 

• I learnt how to quash my ego so that I could ask for help!

• Getting results.

• Positive: Serving the community; humbling experience; leaving ego at the door. 

• Challenge: Funding support - trophies, catering; Pathways authentication.

• Reward: Learn and lead by example. 

• Very respectful communication; Challenge: Division contests - planning and implementation. 

• Challenge of role: Admin of Contests.

• Negative: Tight reminders.

• Negative: Area Director Visit Reporting. 

• Getting people into Pathways.

• Positive: Setting up Area Whats App Group.

• Positive: Celebrating Club Achievements.

• Positive: District 70 Support.

• Positive: Having a successor as Area Director.
