Reading

I can read intensely to grow ideas!

Readers STOP and JOT about important things.

Note important things to talk about later.

Readers make movies in their mind!

I can expand on my jot to grow ideas about my novel

I think.... because...

I wonder...

This shows that...

Grow Ideas About a Character

Readers form ideas about characters by noticing patterns in their thoughts, words and actions!

Readers think, "How do these ideas fit with what I already know?" OR "How do these ideas change what I thought before?"

Readers think, "Why might my character act like this?"

This makes me think...

Readers pay attention to their character's desires and how they are achieved!

What are their desires? How do you know?

What are the obstacles that get in their way?

How do they overcome their obstacles?

Readers use the right words, image and comparison

My theory is...

This shows that..

My character is like... because...

Readers notice that characters are complicated in different places, with different relationships and inside/outside.

I can ground my debatable ideas with evidence from the text!

I can build interpretations about my book!

Readers stop and jot to notice all story elements.

Then think... "Why are these important?"

"How do these other elements impact the book?"

"How do these affect the characters in the book?"

Readers gather their stop and jots about story elements and write long to build interpretations.

I think these jots show the story elements...

I think these are important to the story because...

This shows that ...

This makes me think that ...

These affect my character because...

These relate because...
