D52 uses the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program in grades K-5. CKLA is a language arts curriculum program that helps students develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. CKLA also helps students build knowledge and vocabulary in subjects like history, geography, literature, and science. The program's philosophy is based on cognitive science findings that broad background knowledge and vocabulary are essential for comprehension.
We use the program BLAST phonics by Really Great Reading, which builds upon the Countdown phonics program the students had in Kindergarten. This program uses explicit and systematic instruction to further support the phonics, phonemic awareness and spelling components of reading. Students learn new concepts and apply them to a variety of words. Students will spend time decoding (blending sounds together to form a word), encoding (spelling), and applying these skills to read passages that follow the phonics skill being studied. These passages will come home for students to practice as homework. Our phonics program also includes studying heart words, traditionally referred to as sight words, which are words we want students to know by heart.
We will work on mastering the foundational skills of handwriting, spelling, and sentence structure in first grade. For handwriting, we use the Really Great Reading Blast handwriting curriculum, which goes along with our phonics program. Writing standards are covered through the CKLA curriculum. We also will learn writing skills and content simultaneously, writing about the things we learn about in CKLA. The writing process is taught in three steps: plan, draft, and edit, and is reinforced as students learn new genres. CKLA writing also includes brainstorming, note-taking, summarizing, illustrating, and graphic organizers.
District 52 uses the math curriculum Illustrative Mathematics. Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is a problem-based math curriculum designed to help students build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through exploration, discussion, and real-world problem solving.
