Local Middle School teacher Thea McGaffey grew up dreaming of the spotlight. When she was younger she would blare the likes of Tiffany into her hair brush while her adoring dolls and stuffed animals stood in admiration. Through the years the songs changed but the spirit never died. This year she found a second chance at the dream with her so-called theater advisory club. Sparks began to fly as her renditions of Annie reminded her, “hey, I still got it!” After a quarter of Hard Knock Life, she thought this wasn’t enough and took it one step further, karaoke. She decided to lead kids in singing basically nothing but Backstreet Boys for a whole week before she took the mic into her own hands and showed them how it was supposed to be done. In an interview she explained her intentions by saying, “I just wanted it that way.”
A few weeks into the second semester the Karaoke club started feeling confident to the point where Mrs. McGaffey thought this might be their chance for the big break. She invited a record producer to watch her show, he was shocked to find a middle school teacher, and also explained, “I don’t know why they invited me, I just manage a record store. But I do remember working at Hastings back when these songs were cool.” Nonetheless Mrs McGaffey was disheartened as she muttered words through her tears; “When you’re young, they tell you that you could be anything you ever wanted to be.”
Refusing to accept reality, she led her troup of students in serenading every classroom with Taylor Swift. To this day if you listen closely to the wind, you can catch the subtle tones of pitch-adequate 6th graders singing “You Belong With Me-he-he,” likely referring to their hopes and dreams of a record deal.
