School Wellness Teams

School Wellness Teams: 2021-2022 Implementation

Chipeta Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

Chipeta has started Staff Sporting Events, one being a Bowling Tournament the Wellness Champion ran when he had the Bowling equipment. They also plan on having a staff Tetherball Tournament right after Spring Break  Lastly, on the Staff front we are starting before school morning walks once weekly until the end of the year.

They are designing a Health newsletter that will go out to all the kids and parents of Chipeta. The Newsletter will contain information on health efforts here at the school as well as tips and advice on fitness, health, and other news.

The Wellness Team is creating a student survey with questions surrounding Health and Wellness here at Chipeta. The Team will then compile this data and make goals to better serve the Chipeta students.

Clifton Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

At Clifton Elementary, wellness comes in many forms. While students receive time for physical activity and social-emotional support, many students provide a higher level of engagement with opportunities for additional wellness support. In an effort to further meet the needs of our students, and by the gracious donations from our community members, we are happy to implement a bike lab for our learners. In some cases, behaviors arise due to lack of activity. Because of this, we hope to utilize the bike lab for students struggling in the classroom. Additionally, many students have fulfilled their role as learners and we want to provide opportunities for these students to use the bike lab as a reward for their efforts. We are in the early stages of this implementation, but we hope to make this a valuable tool for our Clifton scholars. Students were excited to see our principals, Amy Shepherd-Fowler and Stephanie Williams, riding through the halls promoting this opportunity.

Fruita Middle School

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

Fruita Middle School works on promoting Health and Wellness to its students and staff every year. FMS takes P.R.I.D.E. in promoting Social Emotional and Mental Health through many avenues. For instance, The Positive Cougar Team recognizes staff with “Shout out” Boards and Staff Trivia Boards throughout the year.  Spring of 2022, Fruita Middle School is piloting Wellness Coaching in hopes to support staff on a more personal level. This coaching is geared to help staff members reach personal health goals.

For the 2021-2022 school year, FMS has used a new Health program that is included in Young Living, an elective class for students. This helps students recognize obstacles that come up in life and consider choices and outcomes for those choices.

Fruita Middle School has participated in several Bike to Work/School Days during Grand Valley Bike Month, and it gets better every year! The goal is to promote more students and staff on bikes. This year, FMS will participate in several bike events throughout the month of May.  In addition, for the past several years, PE classes have utilized pedometers.  This equipment is used in a unit which promotes movement. Students learn the importance of movement, instead of focusing on mastering a given skill.

FMS strives to support all students and staff in healthy activities all year round!

Fruita Monument High School

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

FMHS promotes students to come in and be active during their lunch break. Sometimes this is basketball, volleyball or handball.

Grand Junction High School

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

In 2021, GJHS hosted its annual Walktober events. 66 staff members participated and collectively walked over a million steps in four teams. This event created camaraderie among staff members and a drive to be more active during the day. Many teachers created lunch walking groups in order to meet their goals, and others met up on the weekends for hikes or walks. The picture is just a portion of the staff members involved.

Monument Ridge

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

Monument Ridge is focusing on physical and social wellness for our students and staff. Last year, we were able to purchase equipment for several outdoor games. Our staff members participated in an active game afternoon using that equipment, where we learned and played some fun outdoor games to strengthen our community. We are excited to be planning and looking forward to more similar events!

We have also gone on outdoor outings – hikes, walks, scavenger hunts, etc. – to get active and get to know each other better as we continue working on our new school community.

We are excited about getting active, having fun, and spending time staying healthy with our staff and students!

New Emerson

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

New Emerson's Wellness program is in full swing.  We are a small team of 1 with outside help to encourage kids to be active.  Our NIC team has helped develop ways to make sure students are using their lunch time to eat, but also having enough time to play.  Our wellness team had a kindness in February challenge that had students completing a calendar with acts of kindness on it.  We offer yoga on Thursdays that has a 20% attendance rate.  It is a thirty minute class that helps students wind down after a long week.  Finally, we are incorporating our new playground games that were ordered last year after spring break and having another outside in April challenge.  The wellness program is full speed ahead at New Emerson.

Pomona Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

At Pomona our wellness team has been focused on encouraging students and staff to be more active as part of their daily routines.  Through our work with Healthy Schools we were able to purchase new playground  balls and equipment to offer students a wider variety of activities during recess. Our students utilize and enjoy  the new equipment daily.  In October, we held our annual Walk to School Day where staff and students met up before school and walked as a group from designated locations.  The event was well attended and also helped us promote a healthy transportation alternative for our students.  We are already planning and looking forward to Bike to School Day in May.

Pear Park Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

Pear Park is excited to be continuing with our Wellness Program.  The Student Wellness Team consists of 5th graders who had to go through an application process to become part of our team.  We meet with them every Friday to discuss ideas and ways to incorporate Wellness into our building.  These students also lead daily exercises for the school over the intercom every morning after the pledge.

Our main focus this year is  working on SEL and creating kindness awareness within our building.  To do this our 5th grade team has developed lessons they will be teaching on Fridays to a grade level a week until school is out in May. Our 5th graders are excited and hoping this lesson will help grow a greater and more kind culture in our building.

STEAM @ Tope Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

STEAM @ Tope Elementary SWELL (social/wellness) team is continuing to support staff with birthday celebrations, and monthly potlucks.  We celebrated the Walk/Bike to school day in October. We hosted a Christmas party in December for staff and their spouses.  Intermediate students helped spot primary students and demonstrate safety and skills for our gymnastics unit.  We have a staff March Madness basketball bracket challenge currently going.  Our fourth and fifth graders will have a chance to participate in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament after spring break.  Tope is fortunate to pilot the Health Coach opportunity awarded by the District.  Our staff is currently learning about breathing techniques to reduce stress and anxiety as well as eating to retain personal energy.

Summit

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

Summit was able to qualify for the wellness grant last year that was used to purchase sports and other outdoor equipment to be able to meet our school wide goal of increasing moderate to vigorous physical activity from an average of 10% to 50%.

Taylor Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #3: The District will provide daily opportunities for students to engage in physical activity.

At Taylor Elementary we just got new soccer goals!  Students have been using them nonstop during recess.  We even have Taylor students using them for their soccer practices after school hours.

As a wellness team, we are also doing Monday Yoga for staff after school.  After spring break, we will be doing a staff fitness challenge until the end of the school year.

Wingate Elementary

ADF Wellness Policy Goal #1: The District will provide a comprehensive learning environment to promote the development and practices of lifelong wellness behaviors for students and staff.

We have appointed our student ambassadors at Wingate.  We also have identified our staff team.  Student ambassadors include two second graders, two 3rd graders, two 4th graders, and our two leaders in 5th grade who will pass the torch on after this year.  We had our first organizational meeting.  We met each other, came up with our mission/vision and a t-shirt logo.  We are in the process of putting our informative video together of “8 Healthy Habits” for our Wingate community.  We will continue to announce Wellness Wednesdays and have “tasks” or “asks” for our community on Wednesdays.

Perhaps one of our newer ideas is to motivate staff.  We will have a graffiti board in our lounge where any staff member can write a “success” around health.  We will have a monthly drawing to help with creating healthy habits.

Elementary and Middle School Wellness Teams are participating in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program during the 2019-2020 school year!

Fruita Middle School did an extra challenge and won $2500 for their school cafeteria and a Skype phone call with Jessie Simmons from the Denver Broncos!  Great Job FMS!

School Wellness Teams

History

In the Fall of 2018, School Wellness Teams were started in 14 of our schools.  In order to qualify for this, schools had to complete the Smart Source Survey and designate a School Wellness Champion.

To ensure health equity, schools reviewed their schools data and created a School Health Improvement Plan (SHIP).  School were then given funds to put their plans into action!  Funding for School Wellness Teams comes from the Colorado Health Foundations Healthy Schools Grant!

The District Wellness Advisory Committee awarded $40,000 to School Wellness Teams during the 2018-2019 school year thanks to a grant from the CO Health Foundation!
