Academics

Central High School has a large catalog of academic options ONLY found on our campus. These classes are beneficial options for all of our students but offer an extensive learning opportunity for our STEM students. STEM students are also held to higher academic expectations including additional credit requirements in comparison to students on the D51 Graduation coursework plan. As a STEM school, we offer some alternative Diploma Options outlined below.  At the bottom of this page, you can find some sample student schedules as well.

To meet these additional graduation requirements, Central High School offers to following additional classes as well as some classes only offered here. Below you can explore these options as well as some of the recommendations given to our STEM students.

Science STEM Options

STEM students need 1 extra year of science to prepare for any of the STEM pathways Central High School supports. While all students are required to take Biology, Chemistry and Physics, STEM students need to take at least one additional class from the list below.

Technology STEM Options

All Central High School students need to take Personal Finance and Computer Science classes to meet graduation requirements. STEM students are encouraged to explore all of our other STEM Electives and are required to take a Business Leadership class to participate in any school organized internship. Our Career Technical Education Department supports all of our STEM electives for students. Some highly recommended options include the following, but a complete list is under the CTE page.

Engineering STEM Options

Central High School boasts a unique Career Technical Education Department with all of our Technical Education Teachers being former engineers. They offer all of the Engineering pathway options for students including earning industry certifications, concurrent credit, and real world industry connected curriculumn. A complete of this departments offerings is under the CTE page but some of the highlights only offered at Central High School include the following.

Mathematics STEM Options

All Central High School students are required to take 3 Math Credit classes (typically Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2), but STEM students are encouraged to take an additional year of math to be prepared for any of the STEM supported pathway options. Some of the math class options include the following.

Exclusive Classes ONLY at CHS

AMPED

Algebra in Manufacturing Process, Entrepreneurship, and Design, also known as AMPED is a dual class. Students are enrolled in Algebra 1 and Manufacturing 1 simultaneously. Students will learn Algebra 1 concepts and then use them in their manufacturing class to run a T-shirt pressing business with all proceeds being funneled back into the class.

GIC

Geometry in Construction, also known as GIC is a dual class. with students being enrolled in a Geometry class and a Manufacturing II class simultaneously. Students learn Geometry concepts and then apply them in their Manufacturing projects. These students also run a non-profit through class making and delivering beds for children in need in our community.

STEM ELA

Central High School offers STEM-exclusive classes where students leverage the Problem-Solving Process to explore and discover concepts covered in a traditional English language arts class. Students are exposed to more hands-on problem-based learning.

STEM Discovery

STEM students have access to STEM discovery. An entry-level class where students learn to take creative risks through the exploration of open-ended questions. Working through the Problem Solving Process, students engage in inquiry-based projects through research, design, prototypes, and presentation. This exclusive class prepares STEM students to be successful in any STEM class.

Robotics and Drones

Students have access to Robotics and Drone specific classes through a variety of departments. Students compete in competitive events building, coding, and testing their own robotic devices. Students also can walk away from the class with certifications.

JROTC

United States Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is a program only available at Central High School. This rigorous support program is also a highlight for our STEM students looking to enlist in a service. Our JROTC program has competitive events each year, mentorship options, and specialized courses to prepare students for their service. This program boasts the mission

"To motivate Young People to be Better Citizens"

STEM Advisory

All STEM students are placed in an exclusive Advisory class. Advisory classes offer additional hands-on learning, specialized mentorship from staff, and advisement as they progress through their high school studies. STEM students have the same teacher from freshman through senior year so students have a reliable resource of information throughout their STEM journey.

Mechatronics

Offered in our Career Technical Education Department, and supporting our PTECH Mechatronics pathway, students can only find Mechatronics concurrent options at Central High School! Students can both prepare for industry work after graduation with certification options and/or earn concurrent credit through CMU Tech to earn an associate's degree.

OWL Survival Skills

While the Outdoor Wilderness Lab is a district-wide program, it originated at Central High School. It is now the only high school to offer a survival skills class to prepare students with certifications, and the opportunity to be an OWL mentor for middle school students. This class offers a variety of hands-on learning opportunities all with the driving mission to get students outside to learn.

CMU Chemistry 121

Principles of Chemistry

(CMU 4 Credits)

Introduction to fundamental principles of chemistry. Designed for students planning a non-science major. Topics include atomic structure, bonding, the periodic table, gas laws, mass relationships, solution theory, oxidation-reduction, electrochemistry, and ionic equilibrium. Taught by our very own Summer Jones who holds a master's in Chemistry.

CMU Chemistry 131

General Chemistry

(CMU 4 Credits)

Fundamental principles of chemistry. Designed for students planning a major in science. Topics include dimensional analysis, atomic and molecular structure, stoichiometry, simple chemical reactions, thermochemistry, and gases. Taught by our very own Summer Jones who holds a master's in Chemistry.

Capstone Projects

STEM students are required to complete a Capstone Project upon graduation. These Capstone projects can span over 2 years and are a demonstration of a student's Problem-Solving aptitude. Students follow this process to deliver answers to some of their big questions in our community. Students connect their Capstone projects to their career interests adding an element to their portfolios as they venture off to their future pathways. We are also working to start offering AP Capstone classes to support college-bound students but offer capstone mentors in all STEM pathways.
