For some time, (thousands of years to be more update..) astronomers pondered and pondered, about what you may ask? Well, they pondered about whether or not the universe came to a dead halt or went on, and did it go on for forever? The Greeks long ago also wondered this, but they couldn’t possibly imagine an infinite universe.

Then, in 1929 Edward Hubble discovered something that would change everything current astronomers thought to be true… the universe is ALWAYS expanding. After, the rise of modern astronomy many astronomers were presented with alarmingly similar paradox, the universe either had to be expanding or imploding.

Thus, since the universe obviously wasn’t collapsing in on itself there was mass confusion. Heinrich Obler, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein were left with the same conclusion, Newton’s law of gravity meant all things attracted, so as well he was left flabbergasted on why the universe hadn’t collapsed in on itself yet. Einstein’s theory of relativity ran him into the same problem as Newton… why hadn’t the universe collapsed yet?

Then, Edward Hubble started measuring the redshifts of many distant galaxies as well as their relative distances by the brightness of the galaxy, he then plotted the redshifts against relative distance and concluded the universe must be growing! Which also meant, (once scientists understood what he meant) at some point the universe was once smaller, a lot smaller than what it is today.

So why didn’t the universe collapse in on itself like Newton and Einstein thought? That’s because , since the Big Bang Theory the universe hasn’t stopped growing, and from the looks of it, it might not!
