In 2D Media I, students will build foundational skills in both drawing and painting. The focus will include hands on exploration of art materials and techniques. Students will be introduced to a variety of art media such as graphite, colored pencil, paint, watercolor, pastels & charcoal. Through research and learning about other artists, students’ artwork will be connected with creators from other times and  cultures. Students will develop a final project to show evidence of their growth in media application and technique.

In 2D Media II, students will build on the skills learned in 2D Media I through media exploration. Students will use their own artistic voice, along with developing compositional strategies and proficiency in selected media. Media choices may include graphite, colored pencil, paint, watercolor, pastels & charcoal. Principles of Design will be emphasized and will prepare students for higher level art making. Through research student’s artwork will be connected with creators from other times and cultures. Students will develop a final project to show evidence of their growth in compositional strategies including techniques in media application and the ability to create the illusion of space on a 2D surface.

2D Media III Drawing and Painting, students focus on learning how to solve challenging design problems in their work. Students will continue to develop their mastery in media technique and application. Students will focus on compositional strategies, drawing from life, and experiment in both realistic and abstract expression to communicate visual ideas. A strong emphasis will be placed on conceptual development of ideas and compositions. As a culmination of the course, students will show evidence of their growth in compositional strategies including techniques in media applications, and the ability to create conceptual ideas to develop their own artistic voice.

2D Media Advanced Studio Drawing and Painting, students will work independently to develop a body of work that shows experimentation, concept development, and media exploration.  This course is designed for the student who is looking for continued growth in drawing/painting.

In 3D Media I Ceramics and Sculpture, students are introduced to the basics of 3D art production through the exploration of traditional and contemporary sculpture materials, artists, and processes in a studio environment.  Materials may include but not limited to; clay, wood, wire/metal, paper mache’ fabric/fibers, paper, cardboard, and found materials. Understanding of the elements of art and color theory is developed through hands-on practice. During critiques, students reflect on the creative process and critically analyze their art.

In 3D Media III, students explore intermediate concepts, processes and experimentation of materials. The course focuses on combining materials together in new ways. Students will explore traditional and contemporary sculpture materials, artists, and processes. Artworks will be created, culminating in dimensional forms. Materials may include but not limited to; clay, wood, wire/metal, paper maché, fabric/fibers, paper, cardboard, glass, and found materials. Students learn a wide variety of sculpting techniques, wheel throwing skills, and various firing processes to achieve a wide range of surface treatments. Understanding the principles of design is developed through hands-on practice. During critiques, students reflect on the creative process and critically analyze their art.

In Advanced 3D Media, Ceramics & Sculpture, students will develop a conceptual framework that guides the creation of artwork while incorporating advanced concepts, processes and experimentation of materials. Students use traditional and contemporary sculpture materials, artists, and processes. Materials may include but not limited to; clay, wood, wire/metal, paper maché, fabric/fibers, paper, cardboard, glass, and found materials. Students build on and further develop skills learned in previous courses including sculpting techniques, wheel throwing skills, and a range of surface treatments. Students will reflect on the creative process and critically analyze their art.

In Digital Art I, students develop proficiency in Photoshop using professional tools and techniques. The course work focuses on graphic design, digital illustration, and photo manipulation.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply their Photoshop knowledge to a simple animation. This course will give students a strong foundation in Photoshop skills providing an introduction in media arts careers. Students have access to professional hardware such as Wacom tablets and digital cameras to aid in their work. The final is an assessment of their skills in Photoshop to show evidence of their growth in the course. 

HA2433          DIGITAL ART II DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION

In Digital Art II, students will continue to develop their Photoshop skills and develop a foundation of skills in Adobe Illustrator. Students will refine their graphic design, digital illustration, and photo manipulation skills. Students will continue to explore motion graphics. This course will give students a strong foundation in digital arts and prepare them for future media arts careers. Students have access to professional hardware such as Wacom tablets and digital cameras to aid in their work.  The final assessment of their skills in Photoshop and Illustrator to show evidence of their growth in the course. 

HA2533          DIGITAL ART III DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION

In Digital Art III, students will create advanced digital art and graphic design projects. A strong emphasis will be placed on conceptual development of ideas and compositions through graphic design, digital illustration and photo manipulation projects. This course will provide opportunities to cultivate advanced skills necessary for a range of digital art careers. Professional hardware such as Wacom tablets and software including the Adobe Suite are incorporated into student choice based projects. The final assessment culminates in a curated digital portfolio.

The Digital Art Advanced Studio course is designed for the student who is looking for continued growth in digital art or graphic design. The format of the course features student-driven, choice based projects that are teacher-guided. Students will work to create and develop an original body of work that shows experimentation, concept development, and media exploration. Students may repeat this course.

In Photography I students will use both digital and film cameras to learn the fundamentals of camera usage with an emphasis on black and white images. This course introduces students to the basics of exposure, composition, and manual camera controls. Students will edit digital files using industry standard software and output for sharing and presenting. Traditional film and prints will be processed using darkroom techniques. Students will develop a portfolio, reflect on their semester’s work, and respond to the work of peers and professionals.

Photography II is a continuation of Photography I with an added emphasis on intermediate techniques (both digital and traditional) to support photographic expression. Students will use digital and film cameras to extend their photographic skills. This course delves deeper into the understanding and use of exposure and manual camera controls. Students will edit digital color images using industry  standard software and output for sharing and presenting. Traditional darkroom processes will include experimental techniques for expressive qualities. Students will develop a portfolio, reflect on their semester’s work, and respond to the work of peers and professionals.

Photography III is designed to advance students’ previously learned skills in photography. Students explore advanced digital and traditional camera techniques and develop their own artistic style of photography. Students will be encouraged to think more conceptually about their body of work and advance their post-production skills, both digitally using Adobe products and in the darkroom. Students will create a portfolio of their work. Offered in a Traditional and Blended Format.

Advanced Photo Studio is designed for the student who is passionate about photography or considering a career in the field of photography. Students will work independently to create a concentrated collection of photographic images. Students will have the opportunity to propose and develop a personal concentration of work. Possible concentrations may include experimentation with advanced photography techniques and concepts. Students may repeat this course. Offered in a Traditional and Blended Format.

In Film, Animation & New Media I, students learn the basics of cinematic techniques, video editing & animation.  Students will learn cinematography techniques for effective storytelling and media creation. The techniques covered will include shot angles, framing, and capturing a variety of shots.  Students will learn to use Final Cut Pro software to work in a timeline and integrate audio and visual elements in a professional way. Projects will range from traditional to experimental approaches to video/film editing. Students will learn how to use Adobe After Effects and Photoshop for animation work. Students will learn how to make visual elements move and change, and learn how to synchronize movements with sound elements. This course focuses on introducing the essential skills for professional media creation. 

HA9233         FILM, ANIMATION & NEW MEDIA II

In Film, Animation & New Media II students will further refine their cinematic techniques, video editing & animation skills. Students will become competent with professional equipment, such as DSLR cameras. The techniques covered will include shot angles, framing, and capturing a variety of shots.  Students will continue to use Final Cut Pro software to learn new post production techniques, such as color correction, stabilization, etc. Projects will emulate professional approaches to video/film editing. Students will develop new skills using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop for animation work. This course focuses on developing proficiencies with cameras, Animation techniques and other essential skills for professional media creation.

In Film, Animation & New Media III, students will further refine their cinematic techniques, video editing, animation & analysis skills for professional media creation. The techniques covered will include, but are not limited to: shot types, shot angles, cuts, framing, lighting design, sound design, motion design & animation. Projects will emulate professional approaches to video/film editing and working towards developing their artistic vision. Students will become skilled with industry standard software such as Final Cut Pro, and Adobe After Effects. 

For students interested in focusing on animation, it is recommended that students take Film, Animation & New Media I to build skills working with Photoshop.


HA9433          ADVANCED FILM, ANIMATION & NEW MEDIA

In Advanced Film, Animation & New Media, students will further refine their cinematic techniques, video editing, animation skills & analysis skills. Students will continue to develop new skills and explore new media approaches using Final Cut Pro / Adobe Creative Cloud tools for editing, motion design and animation work . Projects will emulate professional approaches to video/film editing resulting in works that communicate a clear artistic vision. This course gives students access to equipment and tools that expand their abilities and professional understanding of media work. Projects are student-driven, and the course is a good fit for students interested in pursuing a film career, or building a strong portfolio of media work. This class works best for students that are committed to working on projects outside of class when needed.  

For students interested in focusing on animation, Film, Animation & New Media I is recommended to build skills working with photoshop.

In addition to the required portfolio of entry-level art work, all students will be required to complete and submit a summer assignment which is due at the beginning of the fall semester (project will be explained during the mandatory spring informational group meeting.) Students are responsible for providing mat boards; approximate cost $10-15. College Board recommends enrollment in grades 11 or 12.
