What Is The Bishop Superband? By: Nathan Mills
Mr. Bishop was in Middle School when “Schoolapalooza” first took place, and remembered how exciting it was being there and watching people perform. So, when he was hired as a teacher, in 2012, he asked Mr. Blomquist if he could be a part of Schoolapalooza. He partook in the event that year, and became more involved the next year as well. With him being a Chorus teacher, he was able to get a lot of vocalists involved in Schoolapalooza. However, there was a lack of student bands in the school, and karaoke tracks would have to be used as background music. This defeated the purpose of Schoolapalooza, which was to be a live rock concert. How would this problem be solved? It’s simple: with the Bishop Super Band. It was a dynamic Rhythm & Blues style band with many different kinds of instruments all playing together. The idea seemed impossible to many, but Mr. Bishop didn’t allow that to get in his way, and he made it happen.
By pure chance, one of the women in charge of scheduling Heritage Fest was a parent of a student who attended Schoolapalooza, and LOVED the Bishop Super Band. So, she invited the Bishop Super Band to perform the fall of 2015, and they did. Eventually, they would get students to perform along with them at Heritage Fest as well.
The Bishop Super Band only got better and better since then, because, as with everything, Mr. Bishop always tried to outdo what he had done the previous year, making the band both a staple of the school, and the staple of the community as a whole. Mr. Bishop poured his heart and soul into the band, and it is a large part of his legacy as a result.
Elgin Youth Choir and Elgin's Children's Theater
Mr. Bishop did so much for our community, and one of those many things was helping out with the Elgin Youth Choir and Elgin Children's Theater. His main job with both programs was to work with kids on their music and performance skills. In both programs he helped those involved become better singers and performers, but that was only a portion of the impact he had on those people. He created a community for them to feel confident, and like they belonged. He taught everyone not only how to create wonderful music, but to be a kind, cheerful, and loving person. “ He brought joy and kindness to everyone he knew..” - Kacy Davis (ECT member). Mr. Bishop was a wonderful person who spread music and kindness to everyone, and he will forever be in our hearts.
And more!!!
