Battle of the Books is a club where each team member reads as many books as possible from a list of about 20 middle-grade books. After a few months, “battles” begin, where teams from the different schools compete against each other. Each team answers trivia about half of the books, and get points for correct answers and authors. Whichever team gets the most points wins and gets a 5 point bonus. The two teams with the most points then compete one last time in districts. So far in the season, the team has won 3 battles and tied one. The next meet is districts, on Thursday, May 23, and the team is optimistic for the outcome. Stay tuned to see the results on the screens in the cafeteria!
The DMS robotics team recently competed in the Fluid Power Challenge at Bucher Hydraulics. The team had to build a robot that could pick up a wooden peg using materials such as wood and paper. To be considered successful in this challenge the team’s robot must pick up the wooden peg, and then if you can do that you must place the robot on a platform and perform that action again. The more times your robot can pick up the peg the more points awarded to your team. From DMS the team consisting of Ashley Manoj, Katelyn Manoj, and Arianna Gomez. Congratulations to these students and the whole team on all of their hard work this year.

Valiant voices is an all men singing group made up of all three grade levels. At the beginning of the year, Mrs. Roy broke us up into groups, baritones and tenors. They began the year singing 'Wellerman' by Nathan Evans. After that success they moved on to Sweet Caroline, by Neil Diamond and the classic Up on the Housetop. The group went to the senior center to entertain the residents with those songs. They also got to play Bingo!
In 2024, they learned Seize the Day from Newsies for the Disney concert in March.
At the Finale Concert "Bishop: The Eras Tour", they sang, “You're Welcome” from Moana and Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys. Both songs have dances and are sung in harmonies. Both songs are funny and the harmonies go great together as tenors and baritones. These songs were chosen as a tribute to Mr. Bishop because he was fun, loving and joyful.
In science fair club students participate in science fairs to investigate the science topics that interest them. Students gain an insight into the problems and methods of thinking scientifically and work with science instructors to draw conclusions about their research. Completed projects are judged and displayed in late spring. This club is open to seventh and eighth graders. The sponsor of this club is Dr Sitkie. I have emailed Dr Sitkie for a small Q and A about the science fair club.
Q When does the club start?
A The Science Fair Club starts in October and goes until January. If students advance past the District 300 science fair they will move on to the Regional Science Fair at a University in Northern Illinois in March. If they advance beyond the regional fair they will attend the State of Illinois State Science Fair in May at Southern Illinois University.
Q Do kids like this club?
A Usually, we start with 20 to 30 students at the beginning. Once the students realize the amount of work involved with the science fair project the numbers drop significantly. We usually end up with 2-3 projects. Only the die-hard stick it out until the District 300 science fair.
Q What are some winning projects students made?
A Some winning projects are Mohammad Lakanis project and Sathvik Pais project.
