Here at Dundee Middle School we witnessed a partial solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. All students at the school had the opportunity to observe the eclipse at some point during the event. They may have seen a tiny bit of coverage or up to 94% of coverage of the sun. As the moon moved across the sun it blocked most of the energy. Students could feel the temperature drop and the wind pick up.
One lucky student traveled to Cleveland Ohio, to see the Total Solar Eclipse. Similar to here the moon slowly covers up the sun. But in Cleveland it was fully covered. Once the sun was fully covered, you could see the corona, a ring of light normally outshined by the photosphere which is being blocked by the moon. The corona is the only part of the sun that is still visible during totality. Then slowly the moon started to move across until the sun was fully visible again.
On Friday, April 12, we celebrated Day of Silence in respect and support for our LGBTQIA+ students. Students could participate by staying silent throughout the day. We observe the Day of Silence every year as a show of support for our LGBTQIA+ students. The Day of Silence started as peaceful protest against anti- LGBTQ+ bullying and harassment. Almost 82% of LGBTQIA+ students are bullied and/or harassed at school because of their sexuality, so it is important to stand up against this damaging behavior that no one deserves. It is important to respect students who are participating in the Day of Silence because you never know who you may be supporting with your silence, or verbal support.
One DMS student told us that they took part in the day of silence because they and some of their friends are bisexual. They stated, “I was silent most of the day. It was also hard to not be able to communicate.” They were supported by friends who helped them communicate. They also explained that it was their first time participating because they were too nervous to be open in the past. They also said, “I was very proud to be brave enough this year to participate.” Our school’s participation in the Say of Silence made the student feel supported!
The Mystery Rooms Of DMS: Exposed!
By: Nathan Mills and Martin TovarSerrano
We all see the mystery doors at DMS, and can maybe admit to peaking through one door or another at some point. However, you probably don’t know about every secret room here at Dundee Middle School, and more importantly, the reason for the rooms’ existence. Well, we went behind the scenes to take pictures of the secret rooms, and tell you a bit about them. In other words: The Mystery Rooms of DMS: Exposed!
The first secret room is the Science Storage room. It connects internally to Mrs. Martinez’s room, Mrs. Beere’s room, Mrs. Walpole’s room, and Canciamille’s room. It also can be accessed through the 6th and 7th Grade hallways. In it are stored various supplies necessary for science experiments, and some awesome yellow cabinets.
There are more science closets though. One of which is located between Ms. LaGrippe and Mrs. Weinhammer's room, and the other of which is located between Mrs. Campbell and Dr. Sitkie's room.
Next up is the Mechanical Room which houses the various mechanical equipment necessary for running the school (the heating, the air conditioning, etc). They said that it wasn’t safe for us to go in there, so we don’t have any pictures from inside the Mechanical Room, but we do have a picture of the door in the bathroom.
Finally, we have the teacher’s lounge. It is where the teachers can eat lunch, and do various other activities. Across the hall from the teacher’s lounge is a room full of copying machines for teachers to prepare for their lessons. In the teachers lounge are tables, a couple couches, a popcorn machine, and vending machines.
ARK: Do People Care?
By Winter Skrodzki and Nathan Mills
We all know about ARK right? Accountability, Responsibility, and Kindness, the DMS motto, almost like Hakuna Matata or Create Your Own Sunshine. But, do people care about ARK? Do they use it at DMS? Well, this is where we can answer some of those questions. First off, does anyone actually use or care about ARK? You may have just laughed at that question. I mean, of course no one cares about ARK, everyone does whatever they want without thinking of the good of the greater community! However, if you really dig into things, you’ll find that a lot more people care about ARK than you realize.
Now you may be wondering, if so many students claim to care about ARK, why does it seem like the opposite? Well, it has to do with the fact that the students who care about ARK are a silent majority. They follow the rules and regulations of DMS, meaning that you don’t really hear about them. Gossip is interesting when there is a fight in the hallways, but I think you’d be hard pressed to remember a time when you heard about a kid who helped someone pick up their stuff after they dropped it in the hallway. However, if you thought really hard about it, you would remember that kid, remember how he or she made you feel. They made you feel worth it, they made you feel like you won’t alone in this vast universe, they made you feel like you mattered, that people noticed you, and more importantly, that people cared about you. Think about this kid, and how they made you feel. Don’t harp on the negatives, spending your whole day thinking about all the kids that didn’t use ARK. Instead, think about kids that did use ARK, made you feel like you had a purpose, and try to replicate this kid for others. Think about how amazing our school would be if more people did this.
“How you make people feel about themselves says a lot about you.” -Boonaa Mohammed.
Being Unique
By: Nico Jensen
Everyone is unique, but why? Everyone is special in their own way, they have unique differences. Being unique makes you who you are. There are six things that make someone unique: your passion, creativity, personality, confidence, beliefs, opinions, and life experiences. How are you unique?
Charlie D’amelio is unique because she is a model and dancer who became popular on social media thanks to her dance and entertainment content.
Mr. Beast is unique because His gaming channel is the reason why he's among the most popular gaming influencers. Mr. Beast became so successful on youtube because of his catchy thumbnails, catchy titles, and he was doing something different and unique.
At DMS, Kalina Matchimski cares about other people. She loves The Percy Jackson Series. She is empathetic, and knows if something is wrong. She gives the best advice as well. That is why she is unique.
Karishma is unique because she is very caring and charismatic. She has many friends and she is very friendly so if you see her you should say hi because most likely she will say hi back.
Mr. Schamrowski, or ShamDog as he is known, is a social studies teacher who claims he is the rizzler. He says he is unique because of the experiences of his life and environment.
