Winter break comes at a much needed time after months of early mornings, homework, tests, and nonstop activities. It is the perfect time to relax but also to do things you normally don't have time to do. Whether you want to relax, be productive, or try new things, here are some great ways to make the most of your time off.
One way people can spend winter break is by resetting and relaxing. The weeks leading up to winter break often leave people exhausted. Catching up on sleep, having a self-care day, watching your favorite movies, and reading a good book can all be very relaxing and help refresh your mind and body.
Winter break is also the best time to connect with family and friends. Finally being able to have gatherings after everyone has different schedules fulfills that need for family time. A game night or sharing a meal brings people together and creates meaningful memories.
Another way to spend your time off is by exploring hobbies or trying new things. You might try cooking new recipes, practicing art, or learning how to play an instrument. Winter break is also a good time to reflect on goals, organize your space, and prepare for the upcoming semester.
Finally, winter break is a time to enjoy yourself. Watching holiday movies, listening to festive music, or traveling to visit loved ones can make the break memorable. Take time to appreciate the season and enjoy the small moments; it can make winter break both relaxing and rewarding.
Happy Winter Break!
Arab Cup Highlights/Stats
By Sarina Mohammad
Editor
The 2025 Arab Cup began the qualification stage on the momentous 25th of November. Kuwait beat Mauritania with two goals, knocking them out of the Cup.
Palestine had an incredible run, making it to the quarter finals of the cup for the first time in history. The resistant team’s record of success started when they knocked Libya out of the qualification stage through a close, adrenaline-filled round of penalties. They continued to progress through a win over Qatar, (rather unfortunate own goal by the hosts of the tournament), a tie with Tunisia, and tie with Syria. The team’s generational run ended after a 2-1 loss against Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals.
Morocco, a force to be reckoned with, having made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup back in 2022, will battle Jordan, an equally esteemed team in the final on December 18th.
Formula 1 Debrief: December
By Erick Santiago

Parts of an F1 Car Although at the time this article is published the Formula 1 season will have ended, I wanted to use this month’s edition as one final opportunity to explain the basics of F1 before diving into the world of the off season. Now It’s time for me to do exactly that; explain the basics to the parts of an F1 car and the flags that can be waived on track.
Chassis Beginning with parts of an F1 car, I’ll start at the foundation of the car; where all the aerodynamic parts connect and are built off of - the chassis. The chassis of the car, shown in the attached picture, actually decreases downforce because it’s at the heart of the car and is covered up by the sidepods, front wing, underfloor, and other bodywork. In other words, since there is no direct air flowing around the chassis, it provides no aerodynamic advantage or downforce. It also houses the main internal components of the car, like the engine.
Front Wing Next, we have the front wing where the air hits the car first. With its noticeable upwards staircase shape, it cuts through the air producing a large amount of drag but also a decent amount of downforce in exchange, since the air flowing above it drives the car into the ground. Each of the steps in the staircase analogy can be adjusted, as explained in October’s edition, upwards to produce more drag and more downforce, or downwards for the opposite effect. Teams often bring different models of front wings to different races, depending on how many turns a track has and how many straights it has. Front wings can be changed during pit stops.
Front and Rear Suspension The suspension of the car connects the wheels to the Chassis of the car and is designed to smoothen the ride over bumps on the track and kerbs. It is designed as aerodynamically efficient as possible to direct the airflow to the rest of the car as a team wants but still cannot make up for the loss of downforce from giant 18-inch tires.
Sidepods Now, to the right and the left of the Chassis are the sidepods which are designed almost symmetrically with giant radiator inlets for the air to flow through to cool the engine and the other main internal components. The exterior structure of the sidepods are shaped in a way which directs the airflow downstream towards the rear of the car, as a team desires. The sidepods are grouped with the chassis and compose the main portion of “bodywork” as shown in the attached picture.
Underfloor In modern Formula 1, the technical regulations currently place the race cars in a ground effect era. This means most of the aerodynamic benefit generated, in downforce, is actually seen beneath the car, in its underfloor. How that works is seen in the underfloor’s design, with the floor fences, or the initial openings seen outside of the car’s underfloor being very wide, to suck in as much air as possible underneath the car. From there, the air goes through tunnels, known as venturi tunnels, which narrow towards the middle of the car, sucking the car towards the ground and generating immense amounts of downforce in the process. The tunnels then widen again as they reach the rear of the car, or the diffuser, so the air can flow smoothly out from beneath the car, maximizing downforce, and minimizing turbulence in the rear.
Rear Wing Finally, the Rear wing of an F1 car. The rear wing is the final place air flows on an F1 car, serving as a giant wedge which throws the air upwards off the car, generating most of the car’s drag, but also a decent amount of downforce. The wing throws so much air upwards that when a competitor is close behind the car in front of them on the straights their top speed is increased, as an area of undisturbed air develops because it has been misplaced upwards by the car ahead’s rear wing. As stated before, the rear wing is inconvenient in the sense that its giant wedge shape also generates a large amount of drag, slowing down the speed of F1 cars on straights down to an average of 210-220 mph, with the record set during a race at 231 mph. This is despite the efforts of the rear wing being home to the DRS system, explained in October’s edition. The angle of the rear wing can be adjusted during practice, with a greater angle maximizing downforce, but increasing drag, and a smaller angle having the opposite effect. Teams also bring different models of rear wings to different tracks, depending on how many straights and corners it has, since you can only adjust the angle so much during practice.
Flags: Yellow Flag Now, moving to the second part of the article; it’s time to explain the flags that aerodynamic masterpieces of F1 cars have to follow, starting with the yellow flag. The yellow flag can be waved in two ways; single waved and double waved. A single waved yellow flag indicates that there is a hazard beside or partially on the track either in a turn or one of the track’s sectors. (Every F1 track is divided into three sectors of equal length.) A driver must slow down in this region of the track and prepare to move around the hazard. A double waved yellow flag indicates to a driver they must slow their speed significantly in this region of the track and be prepared to stop or drive around a hazard because it is in the middle of the track or a decent amount of it. Hazards can range from cars, car debris, gravel, etc. During a race if the hazard needs action (to be cleared) a safety car can be deployed or a virtual safety car in less severe scenarios in which a speed limit is set for drivers to follow throughout the entirety of the track. Red flag The red flag indicates a session suspension, either to be postponed or completely ended due to excessively poor weather conditions, or a very dire serious incident. All drivers must head to the pitlane and await further instruction. Green Flag The track has been cleared of all hazards and drivers can drive normally, or the track is clear at the start of a session. Blue Flag This flag indicates slower traffic to a faster car behind and needs to get out of the way ASAP. It also means a driver needs to get out of the way during the race because they are getting lapped. White Flag Similarly to the blue flag, the white flag alerts faster drivers that there are much slower cars ahead, which are usually cars with mechanical problems. Yellow Flag with Red Stripes When this flag is waved, it’s to alert drivers that a deterioration in grip levels due to oil or water are on the track ahead. Black Flag The Black flag alerts a driver that they are disqualified from a session. Black Flag with an Orange disc (Meatball Flag) The flag is lovingly referred to as the “meatball flag” because the orange disc in the center of the flag looks like a meatball. This flag alerts a driver that their car has a mechanical problem (like a piece of the car hanging off which needs attending to in the pits ASAP) as it poses an immediate threat to other drivers. If the problem cannot be solved in the pits, the car must retire from the race, which means they must end their race prematurely. Black and White Flag This flag warns a driver that they have been reported for unsportsmanlike conduct, and should be more careful with whatever they have been reported for, or for going off track limits too many times and are on their final track limits warning. Chequered Flag Finally, the chequered flag lets all drivers know that the session they are in has ended. That’s all for this month’s edition, be sure to come back next month for the highlights of the 2025 Formula 1 Championship!
Best Albums 2025
By James Abraham,
Editor-in-Chief
The pop culture scene in 2025 can be described in one word: gnarly. Countless brain-rotted memes, cheating and murder scandals, and politics all over the globe to name a few, gave us little-to-no breathing room all year. Music-wise, you’ve got the biggest names dropping music like Miley Cyrus’s disappointing Something Beautiful, indie icon comebacks such as Lucy Dacus’s also underwhelming Forever Is A Feeling, and vicious fights, particularly Taylor Swift to Charlixcx in the grating and overdrawn Actually Romantic. However, it wasn’t all terrible. 2025 was one of the best years for bands, who finally took the center stage from solo performers despite less marketability. Club and electronic music have taken a critical and mainstream spotlight in ways they’ve never done before, and so many new and old artists of all genres have pushed boundaries of what it means to make an album for the record books. After the tumultuous year that it’s been, here are my top ten favorite albums of this year.
Bleeds - Wednesday (Indie Rock)
Bugland - No Joy (Shoegaze)
Through The Wall - Rochelle Jordan (Electronic R&B)
Choke Enough - Oklou (Electronic)
Baby - Dijon (R&B)
DeBí TiRAR MáS FOToS - Bad Bunny (Fusion/Reggaeton)
GOLLIWOG - billy woods (Abstract Hip-Hop)
Mayhem - Lady Gaga (Pop)
Tether - Annahstasia (Folk)
DDR - Sharp Pins (Indie Jangle)
Essex Honey - Blood Orange (Art Pop)
A Tropical Entropy - Nick León (Electronic)
Top 10
In Big City Life, the girls show off the feminine love experience. “Feisty” is the power pop jazz-inspired story of a man who doesn’t exactly meet this girl’s expectations. “Dreams” leans into psychedelic ambience when she tells her lover to keep thinking about her. The pinnacle of the album, “You’ve Got Time and I’ve Got Money” is romance incarnate – the song balances physical attraction, devotion, and material needs of a relationship which all coalesce into a song of pure admiration. Big City Life is the opposite of pretentious, the girls are aware of their naivety. The album shows that it doesn’t prevent romance; it can be a badge of honor.
Favorite Song: “You’ve Got Time and I’ve Got Money”
The DJ Siblings Joshua Crampton and Chuquimamani Condori (also known as Elysia) joined together under the name Los Thuthanaka in order to curate an album dedicated to their Colombian culture and LGBTQ+ people all over the world. Within every song, every maelstrom of concocted sounds, there are Colombian/Latin influences permeating. But the album is more than that. It is a rally cry, being named after the indigenous protector of queer people. As the guitar chords poke through the sound scape, as the layered synths deregulate the hellish soundscape, as the repetition mirrors constancy, as the DJ voice shouts through the silence– it is a reminder to all the queer people suffering in the world that there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel. Los Thuthanaka cannot be spoken of as a single genre or a single theme. As clearly shown from the song titles and feelings invoked, it is an ode to the ones who came before you and the future ahead.
Favorite Song: “Kullawada ‘Awila’”
Rosalía isn’t one to stray from experimentation. El Mal Querer was a college thesis that brought flamenco to the non-hispanic world, Motomami was a zany pop album with dissonant reggae beats, and now Lux brought orchestra into pop with a dash of religious psychosis. Each and every time, Rosalía gets more surprised that the albums receive such outpouring love. But, what she never seems to understand is that everything she touches becomes mainstream gold. Lux is an album about religion, culture, and worthiness. Rosalía presents divine femininity as more than just the womb with a purpose beyond birthing: her spine is a rosary, her torso is an altar, her whole body is divinity. The orchestra bolstering Lux uplifts the album into an enlightened state, as if she’s discovered the truth of her existence.
Favorite Song: “Divinize”
The fact that Alex G, former indie darling, got signed into a big-name record company caused a lot of his old fans to worry. What if he sold his artistic soul for the money? What if his music loses its charm? Alex showed up the pessimists with the release of one of his most personal albums, Headlights. The album is strung together by the theme of family, future, and hope. He even goes as far as to say that realistically, signing with a big label was inevitable if he wanted to support his wife and children in “Beam Me Up”. While I do believe the quality has dipped since his previous album, and magnum opus, God Save The Animals, Alex G.’s heartfelt and poignant record proves that the renowned singer/songwriter we once loved isn’t going anywhere. “Some things I do for love / Some things I do for money / It ain’t like I don’t want it / It ain’t like I’m above it”
Favorite Song: “Afterlife”
This year could not have gone better for Cameron Winter. He released a stupendous solo debut in the form of Heavy Metal back in December 2024, but somehow manages to top that off with his band’s release of Getting Killed. This album has some of the most mainstream popularity, critical popularity, and praising reviews that I’ve ever seen for a band that isn’t relatively famous. And this was all organically done with pure talent. Getting Killed is an anti-love album; it’s about getting the short end of the stick. While there’s clearly the common rock instrumentation, woodwinds and other experimentation bring out the diversity of this album. The biggest issue, unfortunately, is that it’s hard to share “geese getting killed” or “getting killed by geese” without getting strange looks from people who have never heard of them.
Favorite Song: “Cobra”
If you go back in time to the grape picking, lake swimming, animal coexisting ancient humans and told them about the work-a-day world, they’d pity the idea of a life that chews you up and spits out the remaining husk (unfortunately, they will die shortly of malaria, the plague, or one the many diseases that the work-a-day world has effectively wiped). In The Passionate Ones, Nourished By Time is imploring the listeners to never let their inner dreamer die despite the daily grind. The world is meant to break your spirit while leeching all the worth out of you, but it is up to you to not let them wear you down. The album's many songs circle back to the overarching point: we are all working hard in the same world. “Idiot In The Park” is about a psychic reading, while reawakening your perspective on daily life is the main purpose of “BABY BABY”. Marcus Brown seeks to maintain the hopeful fire we ignited in ourselves as children, and to not let the weight of the world douse it.
Favorite Song: “9 2 5”
Transitioning from R&B to EDM has never sounded more natural. In the album, Brittany Parks reinforces her confidence and her devout love in all of the songs. Each song’s production and style is so distinct from any other one, and this aligns perfectly with the thematic differences in every song. “DEAD” reflects on who Sudan Archives used to be and how she’s always been the same person. “MY TYPE” describes the impact her crush had on her, the length she would go for this girl, and how the littlest actions and conversations leave such major impacts on her. The stylization of all capital letters is not just an aesthetic choice, it perfectly exemplifies the anxiety, energy, and excitement that exudes from every part of the album.
Favorite Song: “The Nature of Power”
I am willing to bet that there has not been a more hedonistic, pleasure seeking album released this year, and I’m glad it was made by Amaarae. Afro-beats, high-intensity songs, unique melody and rhythms, deep tributes to love, along with black and queer collaborators make this album one of the best of the year, to say the least.
Favorite Song: S.M.O
The lyricism award of the year goes to aya, whose ramblings across all of her songs mix play on words, crafty rhymes, and puns along with so many other devices. Being a self-producing DJ as well, aya singlehandedly procured the incredibly eerie album that is hexed!. Inspired by recent sobriety, the album invokes feelings of despondency and fear, never knowing which direction any song is about to head. Yet, there are still the elements of pop and club music poking through to offer some familiarity before she tears it all down with beats of pure chaos.
Favorite Song: “off to the ESSO”
Yet again, folk reigns at the top of my year-end list. Seemingly nonsense lyrics plague the songs, yet reveal truths and create an atmosphere that more blatant, easily understandable words couldn’t. As a recent mother, Joanne pieces together the story of love with isolation that she has felt since the birth of her child. The chilling cello from recurring collaborator Oliver Coates intertwines with her reverberating guitar to build the world of Blurrr. Songs such as “Ghost” and “Why Me” produce desolation. Other tracks like “Doubt” and “Gown” remind us of the better tomorrow. While many people, as seen by online reception once the album made its way to music spaces, asked Joanne Robertson to redo her album cover for its awkwardness, I did not feel this way. It represents what the album represents. It is unbridled loneliness while looking for the answers you’ll never get. Joanne can’t give us solutions, but she can smile and show us that she’s there with us.
Favorite Song: “Doubt”
Gymnastics Season Off to a Great Start
By Elena Aviles
Assistant Editor-in-Chief
The gymnastics season is off to a great start this year for the D230 Gymnastics Team!
As always, the season began with the freshman meet, where the new athletes got to showcase their abilities. It was hosted by Hinsdale Central on November 29th, and all freshman JV and Varsity athletes competed. The athletes had amazing performances, as Maysa Zayed placed 10th on floor, and Emily Pocica placed 7th on beam, 6th on floor, 4th on vault, 3rd on bars, and 3rd all-around.
The season started for the rest of the gymnasts when they competed at Glenbard North on December 3rd. They later competed at Deerfield for a varsity only pink themed meet. Here they placed first as a varsity team! Individual athletes also had great performances, as Kylie Wagner places 2nd on floor, 3rd on bars, and 2nd all around. Avery Allen placed 4th on bars and 3rd all round, and Emily Pocica placed 4th on vault and all-around.
Shortly after, the team competed at Naperville Central on December 10th. Later on December 13th, both JV and V competed at the Andrew Nutter-Solo Fresh-Soph invite, as well as the Hinsdale Central Invite on the same day, where athletes had amazing performances at both. At the JV meet, Reese Wasileweski placed 3rd on floor, 4th on beam, 6th on vault, and 7th on bars. Makayla Hill and Mackenzie Whitlow-Houston also had great performances, with Makayla placing 8th on beam and 6th all-around, and Mackenzie placing 3rd on bars.
At the varsity level and Hinsdale Central, Mayza Zayed placed 7th on vault, 10th on bars, and 8th all-around. Avery Allen placed 7th on vault, 10th on bars, and 8th all-around. Kylie Wagner placed 6th on bars, 6th on floor, 8th on vault, 9th on beam, and 6th all-around.
Amazing job to all gymnasts so far this season! Looking forward, they will be competing at Homewood-Flossmoor on December 16th as a varsity meet. After break, their first meet back will be the Varsity Erin Olmsted home meet. Come out to support the team!
So, How 'Bout Dem Bears?
By Shelby Oliver and Jack Radtke
The Chicago Bears are in the midst of a season of success that Chicago hasn’t seen since Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy shocked the nation with a 12-4 record and a playoff appearance in 2018. Although that season ended in tragedy– I won’t even mention how to avoid resurfacing trauma– the Bears appear to be in a great position to meet or even potentially eclipse their success from that year. Some proven talent, like the stars of the defense (Jaylon Johnson and Montez Sweat) have continued their success from years past. In the meantime, players like Caleb Williams and Kyle Monangai have broken out and are establishing themselves as impact starters on the bears roster.
Some standout games include the Bears’ 47-42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, their 24-15 win over the Eagles, and their recent 31-3 rout of the Browns. In the game against the Joe Flacco led Bengals, Caleb Williams led a heroic game-winning drive after the Bengals seized the lead with an onside kick recovery and touchdown. When the Bears faced the Philadelphia Eagles, they were massive underdogs, but their defense controlled the pace of the game, always maintaining a comfortable lead for their team. Finally, the Bears’ December 14th game against the Browns at Soldier Field encapsulated the explosive ability of the Bears offense; Williams connected with D.J. Moore twice for a touchdown, and their defense generated three interceptions off of the rookie Shedeur Sanders.
I would be amiss, however, if I failed to mention Ben Johnson’s incredible impact on the Bears program. The Bears were in desperate need of an offensive mind after suffering under Matt Eberflus’s regime for three seasons, and Ben Johnson was the perfect solution. Johnson is widely regarded as one of the great rising offensive minds of the modern NFL, and will hopefully be around to coach the Chicago Bears for a long time.
The Bears have been one of the most shocking teams this season, and have nearly secured their playoff spot. With the young talent and expert coaching, the Bears are sure to be a rising dynasty in the coming years.
