One of Carl Sandburg's greatest features is its Teacher Appreciation program run by the student council. Despite challenges from this school year, the program has begun: 7 teachers have been selected for this school year (1 for each month between November and May) and 2 have already been celebrated so far. Teachers receive a gift card to a store or restaurant of their choice and are celebrated on social media and in the school. The program serves to appreciate the under-appreciated, which is vital in a year such as 2020.
A group of 3 to 4 students in the student council is responsible for planning out each teacher’s month. The groups have lots of independence and decision-making power, meaning each teacher gets a unique experience. Along with that, all of the teachers up for Teacher of the Month are nominated by students themselves.
While the teachers chosen for each month are kept secret until their month comes around, 2 have been appreciated already. They are Mr. Osmanski and Mr. O’Malley, two exceptional teachers.
Mr. Osmanski (also known as Mr. Oz) teaches AP European History and was nominated by a student who appreciates him for being understanding along with his organizational skills. In addition to this, they appreciate how Mr. Osmanski makes everyone feel welcome in his classroom and how he treats all of his students equally. He was recognized for Teacher of the Month in November.
Mr. O’Malley is a Junior AP Language and Composition teacher. He always makes his classroom fun and enjoyable for his students and he does his best to break the ice, which is difficult in a remote setting. He is also appreciated for his ability to help students with their essays and English work in general. Mr. O’Malley is the Teacher of the Month for December.
There are still 5 predetermined teachers left for the 2020-21 school year, all in 2nd semester.
