Grading Guidelines in World Languages
Niles Township HSD 219
2022-2023
Philosophy
Learning a language is about acquiring knowledge and skills, and then applying them.
Students should demonstrate what they can do with the language in their assessments.
Assessment should focus on application more than recall. Rigor-Relevance Framework
Integrated Performance Assessments (IPA) is the standard for assessments because they combine the modes of communication in a way that demonstrates students’ skills.
Students must have the opportunity to continuously improve their skills as they move through the acquisition steps.
Educators must eliminate bias as much as possible.
Compliance with behavioral expectations is not part of equitable grading practices.
Using a standards-based grading system of 4-0. (Exceeds expectations, meets expectations, partially meets expectations, does not meet expectations, insufficient evidence) solely based on student demonstrated performance.
Practices
Grades are categorized according to the standards (interpersonal, interpretative, presentational).
Summative work is 75% of the grade.
Formative work is 25% of the grade.
Retakes will be available for summatives for students to demonstrate growth provided they have evidence of the effort to improve and have completed any missing assignments. Retakes are limited to ONE attempt, and for interpersonal and presentational assessments only.
Late work will be accepted, but only until the unit ends.
