This assignment is designed to help you become a more proficient writer and student. To begin working toward that goal, this assignment has two major parts.
The first is Practice. Within the scope of practice are your daily academic behaviors, writing prompts, and reading opportunities. You are expected to take notes and participate in the class from bell to bell. You are expected to participate in the writing prompts, complete those that you do not complete in class for homework, and to make up any writing prompts you miss because of an absence. By the end of the semester these writing prompts will constitute a 86+ page portfolio of writing. By the end of the semester you will also be expected to read over 300 pages. This work is in addition to the major writing assignments for the semester.
The second is Standards. You are expected to adhere to the standards of the class and school community that include, but are not limited to, coming to class on time and being present and engaged appropriately in the activities of the class. This assignment is to get you ready for college and workplace expectations for behavior.
Total points will be awarded on the first day of class. Each instance of NOT meeting the standards, as described below, will result in a forfeiture (loss) of one or more points. If a student depletes all of his/her points before the end of the semester, but continues to not meet the standards, additional points may be subtracted from the total points available for the semester. Points will be deducted in Canvas Grade Book and will be accompanied by a note indicting why the point was deducted. Class time will NOT be taken to discussing or correcting the behavior. Once a point is deducted, it can NOT be "re-earned."
Being an Active Student (AS)
