1. You can start with your pediatrician. Describe the feelings and behaviors you are observing at home and share your concerns. Or, if you are already connected to a specialist (neurologist, neuropsychiatrist, psychiatrist, behavioral specialist, etc.) you can also start there. Doctors often have suggestions or referrals to behavioral specialists or therapists.
a. If you have an HMO, you will need this referral from a provider to have it covered
b. If you do not have an HMO, their referrals are still a helpful starting place for finding to look for a therapist that are in-network (always double check if the therapist will accept your insurance!)
2. If you are interested in finding a therapist on your own:
a. You can go through your insurance to find a therapist (call or go on your insurance’s website)
b. You can also browse providers on PsychologyToday.com. You can filter by location and types of therapy (ex. CBT). You can also filter by insurance. *Make sure you ask about fees or insurance coverage.
c. Here is an article for more information on finding a therapist: https://www.abct.org/Help/?m=mFindHelp&fa=HowToChooseTherapist
1. Start with consulting your physician or the Medicare and Medicaid office. Your physician can help determine whether the therapy services you seek are covered, and may be able to refer you to local professionals in your area who will provide services in conjunction with Medicaid services. *Keep in mind that not all therapy providers will be covered or accept Medicaid or Medicare, so do your research prior to making your first appointment to avoid surprise charges later.
2. Go to Pillars Community Health. Pillars has a wide array of behavioral health and support services. Some services are available free of charge; others are offered on a sliding fee scale (meaning the amount you pay depends on your ability to pay). If you are contemplating treatment, call today because wait lists can be long.
3. Look for other providers that also provide sliding fee scales.
