Check out our series of study abroad info sessions showcasing our 2022 Faculty-led programs, along with opportunities to meet our study abroad staff and attend a study abroad panel! Attend 2 or more sessions for a chance to win a free $50 application fee and a tour of the UMD Chocolate Lab. Dr. Steve Sternberg, associate professor of Chemical Engineering, and faculty-leader of our "Chocolate in Trinidad" study abroad program will provide a 15-30 minute tour of the lab (in-person or virtual) showing how chocolate is made from cocoa beans! You are allowed to bring one friend to enjoy the tour.

JAMAICA | Roots & Rebellion - African & African American Studies, 3 Credits

Winter Break 2022 | This course will introduce you to the history, culture, and social-economic life experiences of the Jamaican people. Based in Kingston, this course will cover topics in resistance to colonialism and slavery through music, literature, politics, and culture on the beautiful island of Jamaica. 4–5 PM | Coral Reef Studies in the Bahamas Info Session

BAHAMAS | Coral Reef Studies in the Bahamas - Biology/Geology, 3 Credits

May Session 2022 | Learn about the physical environment of coral reefs including geomorphology, sedimentology, and wave energy in some of the most beautiful and clear ocean waters in the world. You will also study the ecology of coral reefs and their interrelationship of the physical environment and the biological communities, along with geological and biological field methods while there. 12–12:30 PM | Women’s Health & Policy (Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic) - Info Session


GERMANY, NETHERLANDS, & CZECH REPUBLIC: Women’s Health & Policy - Interdisciplinary Studies, 3 Credits

Summer 2022 | Compare and contrast the disparities in women’s health between the U.S. and three European countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. Examine economic policies impacting women (e.g., maternity leave policies, housing policies, food availability) and study the broad historical and cultural contexts for women’s healthcare with a look at public health initiatives that promote women’s health. Learn about sexuality education programs for youth and how those inform sexual health services and beliefs for their populations. 2–3 PM | Nordic Art & Design (Denmark & Sweden) Info Session & Optional Art Workshop (Learn to make a ‘Ceiling Crown’!)

DENMARK & SWEDEN | Nordic Art & Design - Art, 3 Credits

May Session 2022 | Travel to Denmark and Sweden to study Scandinavian art and design through a variety of artistic styles, media practices, traditions, and innovations. You will actively use, interact with, and create design and wayfinding systems throughout your travels. You will choose a topic of research for further artistic exploration, ranging from the designers of LEGO, IKEA, and Danish contemporary design, to artists such as Hilma af Klint, Josef Frank, Swedish folk art, or contemporary Swedish artists and designers. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2022.


Optional Art workshop: Craft a Creative Ceiling Crown! Blend an ancient tradition with contemporary materials. You’ll see Nordic crowns on display at the Nordic Center (https://www.nordiccenterduluth.org/exhibitions/) and learn ways to create your own ceiling crown mobile. Gather together: an embroidery hoop, paper straws, colorful beads, an aluminum pie plate, colored felt or fabric scraps, scissors and a needle and thread!

Wednesday 3/24| Info Sessions

9:30–10 AM | Chocolate in Trinidad Info Session

TRINIDAD | Chocolate in Trinidad - Chemical Engineering, 3 credits

Winter Break 2022 | During this course, you will learn and understand the process of making chocolate along with the methods that have been used throughout history. While in this tropical destination, you’ll harvest cocoa pods and prepare beans to create a unique chocolate recipe of your own. You will also learn and reflect on how the chocolate industry impacts the local culture and create conjectures regarding how current global trends will affect changes in this industry in the future. 12–12:45 PM | Study Abroad 101

At this session, you’ll get the undivided attention of a returned UMD study abroad student. They'll fill you in about their experience and go over the nuts and bolts of study abroad. The session lasts about 45 minutes, which includes time to ask questions and engage in conversation. >> Join Study Abroad 101 Zoom Room


1–2 PM | Spanish Language & Culture Info Session

Summer Session 2022 | During this month-long program, get a snippet of Spanish life abroad while living with a host family. Whether advancing your existing Spanish language skills or just starting out, you can enroll in one of the three tracks. While in Spain, you will also embark on excursions throughout the country (e.g. Toledo, Segovia, Córdoba, Sevilla) with concomitant lectures on art, history, architecture, and literature at each site. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2022.

  • Spanish Language & Culture in Salamanca - Spanish Studies, 6 Credits - This course track is conducted entirely in Spanish. Hone your language skills with 40 hours of instruction at the University of Salamanca. You will also have the opportunity to take classes such as the Arab World in the Hispanic World, the History of Women in Spain, Spanish Art, Spanish Cinema, or Survey of Great Spanish Authors.

  • Spanish Language & Culture for Health & Science - Spanish Studies, 6 Credits - This track allows you the opportunity to take classes (in English) such as Health Communication, Molecular & Cellular Bases of Disease in Spain, Bioethics in Spain, or an optional Spanish course Comunicación y Salud while also taking 40 hours of Spanish language instruction at your level (beginner to advanced).

  • Spanish Language & Culture for Business - Spanish Studies, 6 Credits - This course track allows you the opportunity to take classes such as E-Commerce in Spain or Current Spain (in English) or Spanish for Professional Purposes (conducted in Spanish), while also taking 40 hours of Spanish language instruction at your level (beginner to advanced).

2–3 PM | Poland - Jews & Poles: Entangled Lives Info Session

POLAND | Jews & Poles: Entangled Lives - History/Communication, 4 Credits

May Session 2022 | This course focuses on the history, experience, and memory of Jewish life in Poland before, during and after the Holocaust. You will come face to face with the tragic history of the Holocaust and confront the discrimination experienced by so many as you visit and engage with key sites on Hitler’s killing grounds. You will also examine the ways in which both Poles and Jews contributed to, and engaged with, a rich cultural, social, and economic life in communities across the region and, in some cases, continue to do so today. 4–5 PM | Berlin: Legend, Myth, Reality Info Session

BERLIN: Legend, Myth, Reality - German Studies, 4 Credits

May Session 2022 | This course (conducted in English) brings you face to face with the history and culture of Berlin from the turn of the 20th century to the present, with a special concentration on the intersections of place, history, memory, and identity. You’ll reflect on how famous sites have changed over time (physically and symbolically) and consider how Berlin is continually trying to come to terms with its difficult past. Friday 3/26| Info Sessions

11 AM–12 PM | Experiencing Italy: Art, Art History, & Music Info Session

May Session 2022 | Students may enroll simultaneously in one or two of the courses listed below. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2022.

  • Independent Study Abroad in Art History - Art History, 3 Credits | Experience Italian visual culture from the proto-Renaissance (c.1250) through the rise of the Baroque (c.1600) while learning how culture, faith, politics, and power impacted art and architecture in different regions.

  • Independent Study Abroad in Art - Art, 3 Credits | This hands-on studio course will explore time-based art such as video art, sound art, animation, and performance art. As you immerse yourself in your surroundings, create art on-site that is informed by your study of Early Modern Art, contemporary rituals, and celebrations, as well as your experiences of the landscape and daily life.

  • Independent Study Abroad in Music - Music, 3 Credits | Because music exists in time, it is often difficult to fully appreciate a composition in context. In this course, you visit venues to dissect their construction and understand how acoustical design and function directly affected the composition of the pieces. You will also explore how the intersection of society, politics, religion, location, and art shaped the Italian musical tradition and led to the creation of some of the greatest sacred and secular music in history.

3–3:30 PM | Women’s Health & Policy - Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic - Info Session
