Course Description:
Familiarize choral music education students with a basic knowledge of the pedagogical, technical and acoustical principles of woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments. This course is also designed to give students practical experience with each instrumental group in order to directly enable them to identify specific idiosyncrasies of these instruments.

Course Objectives
A. Demonstrate a knowledge of the performance techniques of instruments from the woodwind, brass, percussion and string families.
B. Demonstrate a knowledge of the acoustical principles of the woodwind, brass, percussion and string families.
C. Demonstrate a knowledge of the various pedagogical approaches for beginiing students.
D. Demonstrate a reasonable knowledge of the practical ranges for common instruments within the woodwind, brass, percussion and string families.
E. Demonstrate a knowledge of the various articulation and bowing principles common to the various families of orchestral instruments.
F. Participate in a beginning playing experience on at least one instrument from each family.
Attendance
It is essential that all classes be absence free. All excused absences must be approved by the instructor teaching the class that is missed. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated. 2 tardies = 1 absence. Student's grade will be lowered for each unexcused absence.

Healthy performance habits
In order to maintain healthy playing habits, students should arrive at a rehearsal with ample time to properly warm-up, to avoid neuromusculoskeletal disorders and other physical injuries. Periodic stretching and breaks will be built into the rehearsal schedule.
